BLACKBURN ROVERS wing-wizard Craig Conway swapped his football boots for scissors as he went back to his roots to raise money for the homeless.

Craig, 30, proved to be a cut above at the charity event organised and hosted by the Men’s Lounge in Buckshaw Village near Chorley on Saturday.

But that should not come as a surprise as the Scotland international is a trained barber who comes from a family of hairdressers.

All money raised from his six appointments will go to the Blackburn-based Free Project which aims to provide food and essential supplies without charge to homeless people on the streets, sleeping rough or in inadequate shelter.

Craig, who regularly cuts the hair of his Rovers team-mates, including star striker Jordan Rhodes, said: “It brought it all back to me.

“My dad used to get me into the shop on a Saturday morning, doing a few haircuts until 12 o’clock, before I went and played a game.

“And it’s great to be doing it again as it’s a great cause.”

Fans’ favourite Craig, a snip £100,000 signing from Cardiff City in January 2014, added: “The Men’s Lounge found out I’d been cutting some hair at the club.

“They must have thought it was a bit of a joke at first but then they found out I can actually cut hair and they asked if I wanted to come down and do some sort of charity day.

“I was more than happy to and it’s been a great success.”

Craig was cheered on by his wife and son as well as Rovers team-mates Grant Hanley and Adam Henley.

And his efforts impressed Andy Kelly, the owner of the Men’s Lounge.

Andy said: “I was really impressed – he showed all the skills of a natural barber. I’d employ him any time.

“My manager Paul Harrison cuts hair for the Free Project on a Sunday night, for the homeless in Blackburn, so it all came about through that.

“It was a fantastic and we really appreciate Craig, Grant and Adam coming down and helping raise money for a good cause.”
