DAVID Dunn could be offered the chance to remain in the Championship after Bolton Wanderers expressed an interest in the departing Blackburn Rovers midfielder.

Dunn officially leaves Rovers next week when his contract with the club comes to an end and the 35-year-old has been happy to take his time over his next move.

Accrington Stanley have made no secret of the fact that they are hoping to lure the Great Harwood-born star to the Store First Stadium, where Dunn has been a regular spectator during his playing career.

But they have now been joined in the chase by Championship side Bolton, who failed in a bid to sign Dunn in 2007 when the former England international returned to Rovers from Birmingham City.

Bolton boss Neil Lennon is looking to add leaders to his dressing room and has already signed veterans Eidur Gudjohnsen and Emile Heskey during his time in charge at the Macron Stadium.

But Dunn is likely to receive further offers at home and abroad, and may not rush into a decision over his future.

Dunn wants to continue playing but a move into coaching could also be a possibility for a man who has started his UEFA Pro Licence qualification this summer.

Bolton thought they had sealed a deal to sign Dunn eight years ago during Sam Allardyce’s time as Trotters boss.

Dunn had even passed a medical with Bolton, who were then chasing a Champions League spot in the Premier League.

But Birmingham accepted a last-minute bid from Rovers and the chance to return to his boyhood club was something that Dunn could not turn down.

He went on to make 210 more appearances for Rovers, taking his total to 379.

Dunn’s contract expires on June 30 and it was decided some time ago that he would be departing this summer.
