Kevin Gallacher column: Blackburn Rovers ace Cairney deserves to be in running for award

Tom Cairney (right) celebrates his goal at Norwich

IT was great to see Tom Cairney follow up his nomination at the Northwest Football Awards with a fine goal at Norwich last night.

Tom has been nominated for the rising star award along with Ross Barkley, which is very good company to be in.

I am a bit surprised that he wasn’t nominated for the Championship’s player of the year award as well, but it’s often the case that people only focus on the strikers who score the goals.

Jordan Rhodes was a big player for Rovers last season and did score a lot of goals, so his nomination is deserved.

James McArthur is another who did well at Wigan, although all the talk was about Danny Ings and the goals he scored at Burnley, so he might have a chance of winning the award.

But Tom deserved to be in there as well. He came in from Hull and has done really well at Blackburn.

He has started this season well and I hope he will keep getting better.

It’s hard to say how good he will become at this stage, though.

At that age the most important thing is that players stay grounded.

Hopefully he will be one that does, but 80 per cent of players start to believe their own hype.

That is a massive test because you become a big name.

I was lucky at that age that I had good friends around me.

I was famous but they weren’t. We would go out at the weekend and if they thought I was getting full of myself they would tell me. That was what I needed.

Some players don’t have that, but hopefully Tom will.

Well and truly said, Kevin. Most players these days are not grounded and think they are too big for their boots; however, Rhodes is one of the very few whom I have met and would describe as 'grounded and level-headed'.

With regard to Cairney, I regard him as a very good player and a rising star who could well leave Rovers in the near future when a much better offer comes along as he is what I call a 'glamour boy' in the footballing world.

These are just my thoughts based on your article, Kevin which some may not agree with.

Fair comments from Gally.
I reckon that Cairney would fully deserve the rising star award should he win it. I think Ings will pip Rhodes in the other `local` nomination award though.

Cairney is definitely showing some class again now and is all set for another great season with the Rovers. plus a fair few goals too. Hopefully when he does make the step-up from the Championship to the Prem, it is next season and with the Rovers.

I knew this would happen. Looks like its game over for us now.......

Hull City have earmarked Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes to replace Shane Long.

The Irishman joined Southampton last week for £12m, and Tigers boss Steve Bruce is keen on Rovers' Scottish striker as a replacement.

Bruce was dealt another blow on Wednesday after his £7million summer signing Robert Snodgrass was sidelined for six months after dislocating his knee cap.

In addition, Alex Bruce is ruled out with a back injury and, following the sale of Shane Long to Southampton last week, Bruce is fully aware of the need to act before the transfer window slams shut.

Bruce is ready to offer around £12m for Rhodes, with £8m upfront for the Championship forward, and the rest in add-ons.

Rhodes only signed a lucrative new deal at Blackburn last month but has struggled in the system boss Gary Bowyer plays this season – and Indian owners Venky’s may cash in.

Boss Bruce is willing to pay Blackburn the record sum they spent on Rhodes two years ago and give the Championship side bonuses on achievements every time Hull stay up.

With us still owing Huddersfield £4m of the original transfer fee plus 20% of any future profit made on him we'll be lucky to come out of this with £5m. In other words, with Premier League football on offer to Rhodes, we are royally f@#ked!

Well Cairney has got the skill but a Premiership player needs the strength as well look at Burnley they were completely overrun in midfield but had a good season in the Championship they just haven't got the midfielders.I fee Cairney needds to build himself up a bit and a few other players should join him as its fitness that keeps you going for 95 minutes and Rovers have not done that for 3 years now.

Sadly our defence will let us down and as we look unable to bring anyone in why don't we try something different. We all recall how Phil Jones back by playing defensive midfield tightened us up at the back. Williamson will never be accepted by a majority at Ewood although personally I think he does an ok job. Why don't we do the same with O'Connell as he is also showing a lot of promise. He is good defensively and will add a little strength and height to the middle of the park AND we will be giving one of our young assets a game to show what can be done.
We lost against Norwich because in its present form our defence just is not good enough and not because of the referee.

Certainly hope there is nothing in it, as 8 million plus adders if Hull stay up is mentioned. Would need 12 million plus adders to get him I think

You don't half talk some fcuking sh1te, you do. How do Rovers still owe Huddersfield £4m? Provide a link with that information, or STFU! What did Rovers say/do? We'll give you £4m now, and the rest when we've got it? I believe the original £8m fee was including add-onns, the main one - promotion- obviously hasn't been triggered.

The ONLY money payable to Huddersfield should he go, is the 20% of anything above £8m.
