We were let down by the officials in Norwich City loss, says Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer believes his side were ‘done over’ and ‘let down’ by the officials in last night’s 3-1 defeat at Norwich City.

After Tom Cairney fired them into a stunning first-minute lead Rovers were denied a stonewall penalty when Steven Whittaker clearly handled Jordan Rhodes’ goalbound header in the box.

And salt was rubbed into the wounds midway through a thrilling first half when referee Graham Scott awarded a penalty to Norwich after he adjudged Jason Lowe to have handled Wes Hoolahan’s cross into the area despite the fact the right back had his arm down by his side.

Paul Robinson saved the resulting spot kick from Lewis Grabban.

However Grabban scored from the rebound and notched his second in injury time after Bradley Johnson had put Norwich in front three minutes before the end of normal time following a sustained period of second-half pressure.

The loss ended Rovers’ 14-match unbeaten run in the Championship and left a bitter taste in the mouth of Bowyer who, while remaining restrained, was clearly bristling with indignation underneath.

He said: “We feel we’ve been on the wrong side of two major decisions in the game – it is as simple as that.

“Kyle Naughton got sent off on Saturday for Tottenham at West Ham for doing something exactly the same as to what happened here and we didn’t get the decision.

“We go to these meetings and we have to listen to the rules and regulations from the referees and the LMA (League Managers Association) and the wording now is ‘unnatural position’ for the hand.

“Well their lads’ hand was chest high and Jason Lowe’s was down by his side so we have been very, very harshly done over.

“But I thought we responded well (to the decisions). They are a fantastic outfit, look at the attacking options they’ve got, they had 26,000 roaring them on, and the environment was a tough one to play in.

“But I thought we coped well with it so we were absolutely gutted to concede late on.

“But the response after we conceded was impressive. We had one headed off the line, (John) Ruddy saved another, and we kept going and going.

“I think you saw the relief of Norwich when their third went. It showed they knew that they’d had a real test and had been in a real game.

“Unfortunately key moments have gone against us which have influenced the game massively.

“We’ve been let down.”

Rovers midfielder Corry Evans required medical attention after appearing to have been fouled in the lead up to the Canaries’ killer third goal which sparked a bust-up on the sidelines between both backroom staffs.

But Bowyer insisted it was just ‘passion’ boiling over.

He added: “They were celebrating their third goal and were getting in the way when we were trying to get our medical people on to treat Corry Evans, who we feared had been knocked out.

“There was not a lot in it.”

Leave it out Gary and just take it for what it was an away defeat to a decent side, it would be far better to concentrate on the cover we urgently need in defence. It was a great run and now we start again on Saturday at home, its also concerning how many yellows LW is picking up as well. Lets get this midfield settled, Lee is a good lad and always gives his all, however in all honestly he just isn't good enough if we want to be creative going forward. RTID

Sorry GB but you can't blame the ref for your poor decisions. As long as you play Williamson in the middle and not Cairney you will get poor results. Start setting up to attack teams not defend and hope to score a breakaway goal and sit back. I have been saying this for months. It is so frustrating to watch.

regrettably - they always blame others - yeah by all accounts we should have had a penalty in the first 10 mins and theirs was dubious etc etc....but no gary we let ourselves down.

i do wish club officials (at all clubs - not just rovers) accepted responsibility. the likes of mourinho and ferguson, allardyce, wenger are/were the worst.

it was not the referee's fault that we can't last 90 minutes and have not been able to do so for several seasons

Totally agree. Cairney needs to play central - almost as a number 10 and Evans as a holding midfielder. Williamson is not good enough to dictate that Cairney should be played out of position on the right.

Bowyers comments are just in answer to questions he got asked after the game about the officials decisions on the night, but he should have probably said no comment, even though he and the team would be hurting from them. Its part of the game, swings and roundabout thingies etc.

Anyway the games are coming think and fast now and we move on to our next game Saturday against a very good Bournemouth side. Eddie Howe has carried on from last season and got them playing some good attacking football and though they lost last night this will be another hard game. No easy games in this league this season.

It's always frustrating to have key decisions go against you, and Bowyer is fully justified in airing his grievances (although there's no guarantee we would've scored our penalty). However, as has been mentioned already, playing Williamson ahead of King and pushing Cairney out wide is equally as frustrating to watch. Attack is the best form of defence, and whilst Williamson made an excellent contribution when he came on to shore-up the midfield against Blackpool, we shouldn't be starting games with defence in mind, especially with a weakened back four. Norwich were the better side but you have to wonder if they'd have been so dominant had they had King running at them all evening and Cairney was pulling the strings in midfield.

Also, I'm confused as to why the Burnley trolls are mocking Bowyer's comments when a certain Mr Sean Dyche is one of the worst culprits of bemoaning referees' decisions in football.

I always thought that the he should be in the center of midfield, but I watched Cairney closely on Saturday, and he was almost totally ineffective in the middle against Blackpool. He was closed down too easily and had no strength to get past the robust Tangerines. Same went for Evans also.

The problem is not where Cairney plays - it is how we can add some much needed strength to midfield to allow him to play the excellent football he is capable of. Lowe gave us some wriggle room and added some strength to midfield, but he is playing well at RB so Bowyer quite rightly wont want to move him.

I agree that whatever the questions is - Williamson is not the answer - but who is? Hope GB is going to solve this problem sooner rather than later.

The football barometer seems to have swung from good chance of promotion to hopeful chance of the play offs. I personally believe that a manager's job is to assess the squad at the end of each season and bring in the best available players required for the weakest positions.Rovers have a poor record at centre back even Dann made lots of errors we need two good CBs as soon as poss these should already be here if his job had been done properly.

A transfer embargo means you have to meet your commitments to reducing losses and as a result, hilariously, it prevents you from offering any more contracts until your losses are brought in line with the limits, which for 2014/15 is just £3m.

Oh dear. Blackburn Rovers are about to be given a shock that will send them staggering towards League One.

Enjoy the ride you turds.

I don't see a problem with blaming the officials if they are actually at fault?! It's hard enough away against Norwich without extra help from the ref.
As someone else said, cairney and Evans were over run on Saturday. Cairney is a good footballer but doesn't dominate the midfield which is perhaps why he's not in the premiership playing against toure, Gerrard etc.

Don't waste your time trying to explain it.

FFP applies to every other team apart from Roovuuuuurs who have been given a special dispensation from the FA because their fans thought it was a bit unfair.

Venkys are going to inject 200 million, clear their huge debts and buy the next generation of top players. The FA will then apologise for all the inconvenience it has caused, give Roovuuuurs a free promotion back to the Prem because that is where they rightly belong and pay them compensation too.

Ok I rarely write on here because it is usually idiotic banter between fans of opposing teams but I will now state my views having seen the first two games and listened on the radio to last nights. I am not surprised Norwich came out on top, it sounded like we were hanging on for a point once Norwich had equalised and we just cannot do that with our team which is lightweight. In my opinion we lack defensive and midfield steel and also do not have the ability to command games, without that, we will not be in the top two and unfortunately are outsiders for a top six finish. In my opiion we need a commanding centre half and a strong creative central midfielder. Tom Cairney is not the answer to the latter, good player that he is.

Also Bowyer has a point re the penalties as on another day we could have been 2 up at HT but we weren't and we could not do anything about it which comes back to my point we are not strong enough or creative enough to gain back the initiative. Just my thoughts.

Hopefully we can get three points on Saturday but I wouldn't put a big bet on it.

You have been exposed at the back time and again. Your defence is possibly the worst in the division and to make an impact in the Championship you need to have a solid back four, see Burnley last season.

You're heading one way this season and when FFP bites in January your fall is going to be accellerated considerably.

Couldn't happen to a nicer set of moaning, whining, arrogant c**ts. You deserve everything thats coming to you.

All you can do now is look up at your Premier League neighbours and dream of what if.

Fair point. Steve Kean has recovered his dignity and rebuilt his reputation on the back of a very successful spell overseas.

He retains close connections with the Venkys who never wanted him to leave, he was their man for the long haul and it was the fans who hounded him out. A couple more bad results and I expect Steve might be picking up the phone to a rather distressed sounding Madame Desai asking about his desire to return to English football.

Stranger things have happened. Personally I'd love to see him back and lets be honest he couldnt possibly do any worse than tactically inept Gary "the maths teacher" Bowyer.

Kean, lets not forget, had this rag tag team of no-marks up to 3rd in the league before the lowlife fans forced his exit.

Come back Keano, your team needs you!

Kean dragged a mid table premiership team down to the championship and no amount of points won by managing the richest team in the most corrupt league in the world will ever restore his reputation.

Kean is as welcome at Ewood as woodworm at Turf Moor.

RTID

I knew this would happen. Looks like its game over for us now...........

Hull City have earmarked Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes to replace Shane Long..

The Irishman joined Southampton last week for £12m, and Tigers boss Steve Bruce is keen on Rovers' Scottish striker as a replacement.

Bruce was dealt another blow on Wednesday after his £7million summer signing Robert Snodgrass was sidelined for six months after dislocating his knee cap.

In addition, Alex Bruce is ruled out with a back injury and, following the sale of Shane Long to Southampton last week, Bruce is fully aware of the need to act before the transfer window slams shut.

Bruce is ready to offer around £12m for Rhodes, with £8m upfront for the Championship forward, and the rest in add-ons.

Rhodes only signed a lucrative new deal at Blackburn last month but has struggled in the system boss Gary Bowyer plays this season – and Indian owners Venky’s may cash in.

Boss Bruce is willing to pay Blackburn the record sum they spent on Rhodes two years ago and give the Championship side bonuses on achievements every time Hull stay up.

With us still owing Huddersfield £4m of the original transfer fee plus 20% of any future profit made on him we'll be lucky to come out of this with £5m. In other words, with Premier League football on offer to Rhodes, we are royally f@#ked!

We lost to a good team, away from home. Yes you could say it was the referees fault, but that is the risk of the game. We need to get over the fsct we lost and bounce back against Bournemouth

well Gb its hard to lose when some brilliant fans travelled all that way to watch us pick up some points.
Totally agree

It would be a great piece of business as ling as Team GB had a good natural no 10 to take his place who has pace can hold the ball up and bring others into play.

All things a good numer 10 can do for the team

A D Ings / Kevin phillips type player

JR kast decent game was against Huddersfield - Funny that
