Players have missed their opportunity, says Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer

SOME players who go banging on Gary Bowyer’s door for more game time may find their knocks go unanswered.

Rovers boss Bowyer admitted as much after his much-changed side suffered an embarrassing Capital One Cup exit at the hands of League One new boys Scunthorpe United at Ewood Park on Tuesday.

Without naming names Bowyer, speaking immediately after the dispiriting 1-0 loss, said:  “As a manager at times you get players knocking on your door and asking why they are not in the team and when will they get their opportunity.

“Well tonight has presented itself with that opportunity.

“Some have taken it and some have not – and it’s as simple as that.

“We’ve worked very hard over the last 12 months in getting the right mentality and we’ve always been honest and never made excuses – and that’s what we’re doing again.”

Only captain-for-the-night Jason Lowe remained from the Rovers team which started Friday’s Championship opener against Cardiff City.

But when asked whether he regretted making 10 changes Bowyer said: “We’ve spoke about our numbers and we lost one (Matt Kilgallon) on Friday, so we were already one lighter, but what it did do was provide an opportunity for the others.

“They had the opportunity to put a case forward to be in the starting line-up.”

With a few exceptions, including young centre Jack O’Connell, who was named man of the match on his senior debut for Rovers, those opportunities were not taken.

And Bowyer, after tasting defeat for the first time since March, added: “I’ll always defend the players when they’ve given everything they’ve got and they’ve given their best.

“That’s what we demanded tonight but, in the first 45 minutes especially, they did not give their best and we have to accept the consequences of that.”

Scunthorpe were worthy winners but Neal Bishop’s decisive goal, headed in from a Gary McSheffrey corner, was completely avoidable.

It was the second game running in which Rovers had conceded from a set-piece after Kenwyne Jones headed in from a free kick in the 1-1 draw with Cardiff.

And Bowyer said: “It was poor marking from us, the lad has got free and headed it in the goal.

“There can be no excuses.”

Scunthorpe boss Russ Wilcox, a former assistant manager at Burnley, said: “Playing against better players, you’ve got to make sure you don’t engage too high up the pitch because that’s when they can hurt you.

“Blackburn made 10 changes but they’ve still got quality within the squad and there were still names on the team sheet that are very experienced Championship players.

“From goalkeeper right through to the strikers, I thought it was a fantastic team performance built on hard work, endeavour, organisation and quality.”

The players let themselves down, they let the club down and they let the fans down. As did you Bowyer. That was an absolute unmitigated disaster on all counts and has destroyed any trust you had built up with the fans since the harrowing events of March the 9th.

It pains me to be the first to say this but.... Bowyer out!

And Bowyer should also accept his part in the embarrassment by not creating a greater balance of first team players and promising challengers. Fielding a full team of reserves ( and I did include Lowe ) does not give an accurate assessment of how they would fit in to a more established team. Opportunity missed all round!

Sorry, but this whole thing has actually been a good thing...
*We're out of the cup, which isnt so bad, given that it would be more games and potentially extra time penalties etc.
*Its shown GB and the (fringe) players themselves that they are not as good as maybe they think they are, so they need to keep quiet and work hard
*It shows that we are light in defence and need another first team standard centre half
* It sets us up well for the next couple of league games - the squad have got a point to prove

Angry, like it or not and I know you don't, but until they find someone better Jason Lowe is a first choice player.

But I do agree with you, this was an opportunity missed, he should have kept the spine of the team together, introduced the changes around them then had sufficient cover on the bench if things went wrong.

Making 10 changes was ridiculous, no other way of describing it, although the players were at fault for the performance the manager picked the players in the first instance.

The greatest problem is they let him down big time, it isn't going to be easy for him to pick them again.

Shocking statement Bowyer.

No you and team GB are at fault for expecting such a mishmosh of players to gel and to get a result when at the same time most were playing out of position.

It is you and your gutless backroom staff to blame.

I canmot believe they agreed to your team selection.so are just puppets or you are just a control freak.

Mr Bowyer I would suggest there seems to be a bit of a breakdown here. No real defensive strengthening during the summer.

Someone please explain the rationale.

Is a loss for the bench players, It shows we need more quality players to win matches.

Get clear on Luke Varney, Chriss Taylor, Songo, Lee willimson
Ben Marshel need more playing time, send him for six month loan.
Dunn keep him in the dressing room to motivate others
Jake Kean, ask to watch the match and last season matches he played
Ollson ask to play with more confidence, avoid over reacting like his brother.
Spurr - lost touch
Brown - Never seen him
Lowe - keep him in right back(he already got a yellow card)
King - Tell him we are playing to win matches, not running fast into the box and smile.

Get experienced players in the back and in the wings. Otherwise this season Mid Table finish is sure again , if the senior players get injury, we are in trouble to keep the shape.

GB says of the Scunthorpe goal: “It was poor marking from us, the lad has got free and headed it in the goal”. Talk about stating the obvious!!!

The two set-piece goals conceded in two games were given away by schoolboy defending. Who was supposed to be marking these two goal-scorers? And why weren‘t they doing their job? Why weren’t two straight-forward deliveries dealt with?

For the Cardiff goal, the defence opened up like the Red Sea, giving Kenwyne Jones the freedom of the park. Baptiste was in no-man’s land and Lowe turned away as the ball came over to leave the striker with a free header on the edge of the six-yard box. If Lowe had challenged, at least it could have put off Jones, who may not have found it so easy. The Scunthorpe goal was almost as bad.

How do opposing players always seem to ‘get free’ in our box at set-pieces? I was a great fan of Craig Short in his days at Ewood. Presumably defending is now high on his list of priorities, so what the hell is he doing?

Are defenders not drilled on their individual responsibilities? Is defending set-pieces ever practised in training? Judging by our inept displays at defending them it appears not. Unless things are tightened up, we will be giving away another bagful of points from set-pieces this season.

And why are our own set pieces so mundane, so lacking in creativity? There is no inventiveness, never an occasion when you can drool – ‘straight from the training ground!’

but down there in the championship you are not laughing now pal.....
I'm still laughing pal.....

It takes more than one season and one derby win to change a lifetime of humiliation for you cotton eyed joes and the fact you can't see it or refuse to acknowledge it is even more hilarious.
you are only as good as the league you are in and the last game you played .Whichever way you look at it whether its Premier League Burnley or League 1 Scunthorpe, the b....ds have developed an allergic reaction to Claret & Blue.

Wake up and stop Living in the Past, Jethro
Football clubs are built on history and unfortunately for you, ours is far superior.
Now pull your dungarees up and try to grasp that two decent seasons in 40 and one win in 35 doesn't alter the facts princess......

I'm sure you're a lovely person but you do come across as the total opposite of a lovely person.

Owd Nick....the difference between Scunthorpe scoring and Rovers conceding. We definitely conceded that one!!! Incidentally, when did putting defenders on both posts go out of fashion?
When the attacking side put players on the line who couldn't be offside perhaps?

I don't know, tactics change and while we should learn from the past we shouldn't stay anchored there, otherwise we would all be watching from stadiums with wooden seats.

I mean "people" like Doughnut Dave, TurfMoor Tom and the rest probably still lament the invention of crossbars, perhaps even the introduction of netting, it's probably why they are so anally retentive.

Perhaps we should see a return to the good old days in China when the losing manager and captain committed suicide if they lost a game?
