BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer’s labelled his side’s shock Capital One Cup exit to Scunthorpe United last night as ‘unacceptable’ and one of the ‘worst’ displays of his time in the Ewood Park hotseat.

For the second season running Rovers crashed out of the competition to League One opposition after former Blackpool midfielder Neal Bishop headed home in the 33rd minute to earn the Iron a fully deserved 1-0 win.

And Bowyer, who made 10 changes to the team which started Friday’s Championship opener against Cardiff City, offered no hiding place for his badly out-of-sorts players.

He said: “From our point of view it’s not acceptable and in my time here that’s the worst we’ve been, especially the first 45 minutes.

“But I have to give credit to Scunthorpe.

“But there’s no excuses from our side – and that’s it really.”

The defeat ended Rovers’ 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions and leaves Bowyer with plenty to ponder going into Saturday’s league trip to Blackpool.

And Bowyer, who struggled to find any positives on a desperately disappointing night, added: “We had strong words at half-time and gave them 15 minutes to sort it out but it didn’t happen.”
