Garry Flitcroft believes top-flight return would be fitting for Blackburn Rovers star David Dunn

GARRY Flitcroft believes there would be no better way for David Dunn to round off his Blackburn Rovers career than by leading his hometown club back into the Premier League.

Dunn will definitely spend another year as a player at his beloved Rovers after putting pen to paper on a new one-year contract.

MORE TOP STORIES:

And if it is to be one of the mercurial midfielder’s final seasons wearing the famous blue and white halved shirt then his former team-mate reckons it would be fitting for it to end in promotion from the Championship.

And Flitcroft, the last Rovers skipper to lead the club up into the top flight of English football 13 years ago, has no doubt that the 34-year-old can have a big say in trying to achieve that.

“Dunny’s an exceptional talent and if he can help get them up this season then it would be great for him to finish his career where it started, in the Premiership,” said Flitcroft, who played alongside Dunn in the Rovers midfield when the club finished second in the old First Division in 2000-01.

“It’s great news for Blackburn that Dunny has signed on for another year as if he’s fit he can still make things happen.

“We saw it last season. He played 25 games and in those games he did make things happen.

“He still offers you something different in that final third.”

Dunn has made 366 appearances for Rovers across two spells split by a stint at Birmingham City.

The former England international, who is entering his 14th season at Ewood Park, would have made more had it not been for injury.

But Flitcroft has told Dunn, who last season brought up 50 league goals Rovers, to keep playing for as long as possible.

“I finished through injury when I was 33 and I missed football a lot,” said the Chorley manager.

“David’s had his injuries too but they’ve got a good physio at Blackburn in Dave Fevre and a good medical team.

“They’ve got to manage him right and get him on the pitch as much as they can because he’s still got a lot to offer.”

Dunn and the rest of the Rovers squad returned home yesterday after a week-long warm weather training camp in Portugal.

They rounded off the trip with a 1-0 win over Portuguese outfit SC Freamunde in a behind-closed-doors clash on Saturday.

Jordan Rhodes got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Rovers are next in action when they make the short journey to Accrington Stanley on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Rovers U21s, meanwhile, head to AFC Darwen tomorrow (7.45pm) on the back of a 5-4 victory at Knaresborough Town on Saturday.

Jordan Slew (2), Hyuga Tanner, Sam Lavelle and Jordan Preston shared the strikes.

Dunny, why go to all the trouble to shave your head then not bother with your chin ?
Anyway it's true he can make things happen when fit. Lets have a good 'last' season maybe, out of him.

No more than 10 starts - i reckon this season. hopefully rovers have tied him down on a pay as you play deal. i believe he started 14 last season

he looks more like desperate dann than desperate dunn with his head shaved. we all know he is a bit partial to a cow pie.

I'm surprised you forgot, after all they did such a good job of all but destroying our football club through ignorance and con-men, you scrubbers put all your benefits together to pay for a plane to fly over Ewood with their name in big letters hanging from the back of it......
Only 25 years behind our original plane gag of course, but that's typical of your 3rd world redneck town.

If a club with League 1 facilities and support like 1 Bonleh can get out of the Championship, the former Premier League, League Cup and Play-off winners can definitely get out of it.
If Bonleh can do it, ANY club can do it. You're the bench mark to lower league clubs - well done.....

If we don't go up, we will just have to console ourselves the following season by taking six easy points off you, after all you WILL be back in the chumpionship then as you haven't a hope of staying in the prem. BRFC will always cast a shadow over burnley because you will never win anything. By my reckonings you're next victory over us isn't due until 2048!! Enjoy your season in the sun, just try to ignore all the thrashings you get, at least you can always say, I saw bonleh play Man U ont' turf. It was a shame that they put nine past us, still you should have heard the cheer when jones scored the own goal. Nine- one it finished but we played well for the first minute or so, 100% possession we had!!

Disrespectful comment. Flitcroft was a great leader for Rovers and we've missed his gritty, sleeves rolled up approach ever since. He loves Rovers and his only ambition is to manage us. He'd zero interest in playing for Sheff Utd. and that's really what finished his career. Agree on Dunny, he can still turn a stalemate on its head. And he wasn't as often injured last season as we were led to believe.

I liked Flitcroft, was a great player for Rovers - I remember us playing away at Derby on our last return to the Prem and Burleys captains armband came off in their box. As Burley tried to pick it up Flitty stamped on it and rubbed it into the turf, much to the toothless Burleys disgust...

also remember Jeff Winter sending him off on his debut!

Rochina for me, Dunn is in the twilight of his career while Rochina still has potential.

Now if we could transport the football side of Dunny's brain into Rochina's, then we would have a player.
