GARY Bowyer may have got the two players he wants in before the start of pre-season but that will not halt the Blackburn Rovers boss’s ‘constant’ search for further reinforcements.

Bowyer this week swooped for Chris Brown and the arrival of the Doncaster striker will be swiftly followed by that of Luke Varney.

Rovers should announce the signing of Varney on Tuesday after his contract with Leeds officially expires.

The versatile forward, who can also play out wide, spent the final three months of last season on loan at Ewood Park and he will become Bowyer’s second capture of the summer.

Bowyer told the Lancashire Telegraph earlier this month that he was determined to have a ‘couple more faces in’ before training resumes at Brockhall on Wednesday.

But while he has achieved his aim that is not preventing him from trying to make the two further additions he believes Rovers need.

Bowyer said: “We’re tirelessly working away trying to get a couple more in.

“It’s constant, absolutely constant.

“We’re speaking to different agents about players, both in and out.

“We’re working very hard to get things over the line as we feel we could still strengthen in one or two areas.”

One area which Bowyer is certainly attempting to strengthen is defence.

Ideally he would like a player who can play at right back and centre back.

Michael Keane filled that position with great success at the back end of last season after joining on loan from Manchester United.

But it remains to be seen whether new United boss Louis van Gaal will be willing to let the England U21s starlet go back out on loan this season.

Former England international Rio Ferdinand, who has left Old Trafford after 12 seasons, believes Keane is destined for the top.

When asked on Twitter yesterday what his view was of the former Rovers loanee, Ferdinand said Keane ‘will be a top player one day. Cultured. Eager to learn and be coached. Vital’.

Bowyer is also working to reduce the size of his squad.

Alan Judge has been sold to Brentford while David Goodwillie has agreed to cancel his contract by mutual consent.

But Leon Best, Dickson Etuhu, DJ Campbell, Jordan Slew and Alex Marrow remain on the transfer list and it is believed Rovers would be willing to listen to offers for Ruben Rochina.

Discussions are ongoing over new contracts for David Dunn and Markus Olsson.

Dunn, who is hoping to extend his stay with Rovers into a 14th season, is said to be relaxed over the talks.

Meanwhile, season ticket holders are reminded that they have until Monday to reclaim their seat.
