BLACKBURN Rovers face a decision over what to do with DJ Campbell after the striker was sent back early from his loan spell at Championship rivals Millwall.

The Lions have cut short Campbell’s stay at the Den following his rearrest last week as part of a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation into alleged spot-fixing in football.

The 32-year-old, however, will not be allowed to play for Rovers again this season.

Campbell agreed to join Millwall on loan until the end of the campaign in January.

That means he will remain registered with the relegation-threatened Lions for the next four weeks.

Therefore Rovers, despite having to pay the veteran forward’s wages in full, will not be able to select him in any of their final five games of the season even if they had wished to do so.

That leaves boss Gary Bowyer having to decide whether to introduce Campbell, who has just over one year remaining on his Rovers contract, back into his squad to train or possibly give him time off.

Rovers granted Campbell time off to spend with his family in December after he was one of six men originally arrested by the NCA as part of its probe into alleged spot-fixing in football.

Having been released on bail until April 8 without charge Campbell went on to make four appearances for Rovers – in the league wins over Leeds United and Doncaster and the FA Cup ties against Manchester City – before signing for Millwall on loan on January 20.

But last Thursday (April 3) the NCA released a statement confirming it had re-arrested the six original suspects based upon new evidence along with a further seven footballers aged between 18 and 30 who play for clubs based in the north west of England.

A further NCA statement on Friday (April 4) confirmed that the 13 individuals, who were interviewed at police stations across the country, had been bailed until late June.

It is understood that Millwall retained the option of cancelling Campbell’s loan when they agreed a deal with Rovers for the former Blackpool frontman’s services in January.

Campbell scored two goals in nine appearances for the Lions but has not featured in their line-up since their 3-2 home loss to Birmingham City on March 25.

Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler said: “We considered the situation DJ is in and felt it best for all parties, including the player, that we release him from his loan here.”
