BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer believes Paul Robinson can earn a remarkable England recall.

Robinson, who retired from international football in 2010, has been in fine form for Rovers since recovering from a blood clot on his lung that threatened his life.

And that form has sparked reports of a Three Lions return for the 34-year-old and a possible place in their World Cup squad for this year’s tournament in Brazil.

And if Robinson, who has won 41 England caps and kept four clean sheets in five matches at the 2006 World Cup, can be lured out of international retirement he would receive the full backing of his club boss.

Bowyer said: “If it was to happen everybody connected to the club would be absolutely delighted for him after what he’s been through in the last year or so.

“And why shouldn’t they ask him? He’s played many a time for his country, there is not a massive number of talented English goalkeepers and Robbo is now back fit and playing so well.

“It’s not up to me but if there was a chance I would not dismiss him.”

England manager Roy Hodgson seems certain to take Joe Hart and Ben Foster to Brazil but the third goalkeeping spot is up for grabs.

After 13 months on the sidelines Robinson returned to the Rovers team for their FA Cup third-round tie at home to Manchester City on January 4.

He impressed in the 1-1 draw with the Premier League side and has since kept three clean sheets in five Championship games and produced a man-of-the-match display in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough.

Bowyer said: “His performances have spoke for themselves.

“On Saturday we really needed him and I was delighted that he was able to produce the quality that he has always shown throughout his career.

“You don’t play as often he has done for his country without having the awesome ability that he showed on Saturday.”

And Bowyer believes Robinson’s two Rovers understudies Jake Kean and Simon Eastwood have the perfect role model to learn from.

“We are blessed to have three goalkeepers who are really pushing each other to get that number one jersey,” said Bowyer, who also paid tribute to the work done by Rovers goalkeeping coach John Keeley.

“Paul has got it and the experience he can pass on to the young keepers is invaluable.

“At the same time they also have to note how mentally tough Robbo is and put that into their game as well.

“To have gone through what Robbo has gone through shows just how tough he is.”
