COLNE boss Steve Cunningham wants his record-breaking side to keep their feet firmly on the accelerator as they prepare for a trip to Ashton Athletic tonight.

The Reds made it 10 wins on the spin for the first time in the North West Counties League Premier Division when they triumphed 1-0 at West Didsbury & Chorlton on Saturday.

And Cunningham, whose side have risen to third in the table following their staggering run of form, is now challenging his team to keep their faint title hopes alive at Ashton Athletic tonight.

The Reds are 22 points off leaders Runcorn Linnets with four games in hand and also trial Glossop North End by 11 points having played two games more so Cunningham knows the title, and promotion to the Evo-Stik League, is a long shot.

But he isn’t giving up.

“If we win all our games and the other sides lose three or four then we can do it,” said Cunningham who revealed he was keen to bring in at least one new addition before the deadline for signing players passes on Wednesday.

“There is also the chance that the league might change their mind and promote two teams depending on who has been relegated so we just want to win as many games as we can.

“We don’t want to end the season wondering what if?

“I think the league record for wins is 20 and we have 10 games left so who knows? Perhaps we can end the season with promotion and a record!”

Cunningham is also keen to take the momentum from this season into next, when he believes the club will be challenging for the title from the outset.

He added: “We want the players to keep performing and keep getting as many points as possible.

“If we can finish this season strongly then we can take it into next season and hopefully be one of the sides setting the pace at the top of the table.

“All the players want to be a part of it at this club next season, the club is really going places and they all want to be successful.

“We have grown our crowds from 50 to 200 because of this run and I want to keep rewarding the fans who come and pay good money to support us.”

Despite their scintillating sequence of results Cunningham knows his side will be in for a tough test against an Ashton side who are three points behind the Reds in fifth.

He added: “It will be a tough game, they have done really well this season and it is a former club of mine so I know what to expect.

“We battled really well to get the win at West Didsbury at the weekend and that will stand us in good stead as it proved we can tough it out.”

Elsewhere tonight, Bacup & Rossendale Borough are on the road at West Didsbury & Chorlton as they bid to cut the gap to safety to two points following a weekend defeat at home to Abbey Hey.
