BURNLEY’s Wembley win over Sheffield United that secured a return to the top flight for the first time in 33 years has been voted as your game of the 2000s.
The Clarets 1-0 win under the Wembley arch on a scorching hot May day was sealed thanks to a Wade Elliot strike in the 13th minute of the game, and it secured 35% of the vote in our poll.
It was the 61st game of a long season, which had seen Burnley come within two minutes of the League Cup final, but it was a fitting end to a campaign high on drama.
Owen Coyle’s side had won plaudits during the season for their passing football and they stuck to their principles in the intensity of a Championship Play-Off final.
Wembley rocked to the roar of 36,000 Clarets fans at the final whistle as they celebrated their long awaited return to top flight football.
In second place was Burnley’s penalty shoot out win at Stamford Bridge in that League Cup run, while third place went to the Premier League victory over champions Manchester United at Turf Moor.
