Game A: April 29, 1980, Bury 1 Rovers 2 ROVERS secured promotion back to the second tier with victory at Bury in their penultimate match of the season.

Howard Kendall’s side were 20th in the Third Division table in November but went on a remarkable run, including 14 wins and a draw during a 15-game sequence.

Promotion was sealed in front of 13,000 in Rovers’ game in hand on a balmy late April evening at Bury’s Gigg Lane. With Bury’s average gate for the season only 4,200, many of the crowd were Rovers supporters.

Steve Johnson netted for Bury but Andy Crawford’s double, including a second-half winner, gave Rovers the victory they needed to seal promotion. They have not been outside the top two divisions since then.

Rovers: Butcher, Rathbone, Branagan, Kendall, Keeley, Fazackerley, Brotherston, Crawford, Garner, McKenzie, Parkes (Thorley).

Game B: September 10, 1983, Rovers 5 Derby 1 SIMON Garner scored all five goals as Rovers thrashed Derby County.

Rovers had made an indifferent start to their Second Division campaign in 1983/94, taking five points from four matches.

Bobby Saxton’s team had not even scored in their previous two games but one man stole the show at Ewood Park.

A crowd of only 5,837 was present but 23-year-old Garner, Rovers’ top scorer for the previous two seasons, netted a hat-trick to put them 3-0 up against Derby at half time.

The forward then made it five goals for the game, including a penalty, as he scored twice more after the interval.

Rovers came crashing back down to earth as they lost 6-0 at Man City a week later.

Game C: March 29, 1987, Rovers 1 Charlton 0 ROVERS lifted the Full Members Cup with victory over Charlton at Wembley.

Don Mackay’s team had beaten Ipswich to reach the final and around 28,000 Rovers supporters travelled to London, in a total crowd of 40,000.

The competition was introduced a year earlier, for clubs in the top two divisions, following the ban on English sides competing in Europe. Rovers did not take part in the first year but their entry during 1986/87 led to them winning their first national cup since the FA Cup in 1928.

A young Colin Hendry, then playing up front, scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute as Second Division Rovers secured victory over top flight Charlton.

Game D: October 8, 1988, Rovers 5 Crystal Palace 4 ROVERS emerged victorious in a nine-goal thriller at Ewood Park in 1988.

Rovers went into the Second Division fixture having made a strong start to the season. Palace in contrast had struggled, but it was 1-1 at half time as Howard Gayle netted for Rovers and Geoff Thomas scored for the visitors.

The second half produced an incredible seven goals.

Ian Wright, Mark Bright and Gary O’Reilly were all on target for Palace, but it was a second from Gayle, two from Simon Garner and goal from Colin Hendry that were enough to give Rovers victory.

Palace would finish the season well, beating Rovers in the play-offs and eventually securing promotion.

Game E: April 15, 1989, Rovers 4 Manchester City 0 SIMON Garner broke the club’s goalscoring record with a hat-trick in a remarkable win over Manchester City, although his feat was overshadowed by tragic events elsewhere.

The match occurred on the same afternoon as the Hillsborough disaster, ensuring there could be no great celebrations at Ewood.

Don Mackay’s side went into the game third in the Second Division, but 11 points behind second-placed City.

Garner needed to score just once to equal Tommy Briggs’ record of 140 league goals for the club, but netted three times.

Andy Kennedy put Rovers ahead in the seventh minute before Garner soon doubled the lead. The forward broke the goalscoring record to make it 3-0 in the 74th minute and he then completed his hat-trick.
