BURNLEY’S 4-1 thrashing of Leeds, at Elland Road, was the runaway winner among Clarets fans for their game of the seventies.
The game ended on a sour note, with a career-changing injury to Frank Casper.
But in an era when Leeds provided formidable opposition for almost all that went before them, beating their Yorkshire rivals in such emphatic style – including a wonder goal from Paul Fletcher – surpassed other memorable fixtures that season for Clarets fans.
The game received more than half of the votes, winning with 55 per cent and pipping the Second Division title winning game against Preston at Deepdale, which came in second with 28 per cent of the votes.
The 1978 Anglo-Scottish Cup final success against Oldham came higher in the pecking order than Burnley’s last East Lancashire derby win later that season.
That success was the last time the Clarets defeated Blackburn Rovers with both last season’s clashes between the pair ending in 1-1 draws.
