Game A November 17, 1973, Rovers 5 Watford 0

ROVERS’ emphatic victory over Watford would prove to be Ken Furphy’s final league game as manager of the club.

Rovers had recovered from a poor start to their Third Division campaign and went into the Ewood Park clash with Watford having beaten Plymouth, Bournemouth and Port Vale in their previous three matches.

Tony Parkes put Rovers ahead in the November fixtures before two goals from Tony Field and strikes from Barry Endean and Stuart Metcalfe completed a comprehensive result.

Rovers then defeated Willington in the first round of the FA Cup before Furphy departed to join top flight club Sheffield United.

Richard Dinnis was made caretaker boss.

Rovers: Jones, Heaton, Arentoft, Garbett, Waddington, Fazackerley, Napier, Metcalfe, Endean, Parkes, Field. Sub not used: O’Mara.

Game B December 26, 1973, Oldham 2 Rovers 3

A DRAMATIC Boxing Day fixture turned in Rovers’ favour midway through the 1973/74 campaign.

Rovers fell behind at Boundary Park when former Burnley forward Andy Lochhead, coming to the end of his career, found the net for Oldham. But, with Richard Dinnis in caretaker charge, John O’Mara levelled the match with a header before half time.

Lochhead’s second of the game restored Oldham’s lead two minutes after half time but it was 2-2 in the 55th minute as Tony Field equalised.

A goal from Napier then put Rovers ahead for the first time to give them victory.

Gordon Lee was soon appointed as boss, but Rovers finished 13th that season.

Game C February 15, 1975, Rovers 5 Plymouth 2

ROVERS moved back to the top of the Third Division table with this comeback win over promotion rivals Plymouth.

The fixture came just 11 days after Rovers had lost 2-1 at Plymouth. The Devon side went 2-0 up at Ewood as Hugh McAuley scored after good work from Paul Mariner, then John Delve also found the net.

Rovers’ misery deepened as Don Martin’s penalty was saved by Plymouth keeper Jim Furnell, but it was 2-1 when Ken Beamish scored before half time.

Gordon Lee’s side then moved 3-2 in front after the interval with two quick goals from Martin and Mike Hickman.

The duo each scored again, in a pivotal result in Rovers’ promotion campaign.

Rovers: Jones, Heaton, Burgin, Metcalfe, Hawkins, Fazackerley, Beamish, Oates, Hickman, Parkes, Martin. Sub not used: Endean.

Game D April 19, 1975, Rovers 2 Chesterfield 0

ROVERS’ only promotion of the 1970s was confirmed with victory over Chesterfield.

Gordon Lee’s side were unbeaten in 14 games stretching back to early February when they faced the Spireites.

Rovers still had three matches left to play after the Chesterfield game but were keen to secure their promotion from the third tier and great efforts were made to make sure the game went ahead after heavy rain in the morning.

Stuart Metcalfe’s penalty put Rovers ahead in the Ewood mud two minutes before half time and Mike Hickman then doubled the advantage with a header in front of a crowd of 14,780.

Promotion was confirmed at full time to end four years in the wilderness of the third tier.

Game E December 26, 1977, Burnley 2 Rovers 3

ROVERS beat Burnley only once during the 1970s, but did so in memorable fashion at Turf Moor.

Rovers stood fourth in Division Two when they made the trip to Burnley on Boxing Day during the 1977/78 season.

Burnley were at the wrong end of the table and Rovers put the game beyond them as they raced into a 3-0 half time lead.

David Wagstaffe netted in the third minute after getting on the end of Noel Brotherston cross.

A second goal followed from Keith Fear in the 29th minute, and it was 3-0 at the interval as Noel Brotherston scored.

Fear then had a penalty saved in the second half before Tony Morley and Peter Noble pulled two goals back for Burnley.

Rovers: Butcher, Hird (Keeley), Bailey, Metcalfe, Waddington, Fazackerley, Brotherston, Fear, Wagstaffe, Parkes, Taylor.
