Rovers Hall of Fame: The Goalkeepers
5:21pm Friday 1st June 2012 in Rovers Hall of Fame
TODAY the Lancashire Telegraph launches the Blackburn Rovers Hall of Fame, where you decide which players get selected.
We are giving you the opportunity to vote for their favourite players from Ewood Park, position by position, with a nominated shortlist of players featured every Saturday this summer.
We begin with Rovers’ top goalkeepers, with a shortlist of five to choose from. Cast your vote at the bottom of this page.
Brad Friedel
A hero of Rovers’ Worthington Cup success in 2002, the American was also a crucial part of the side that secured several top half finishes in the Premier League.
Tim Flowers
Rovers’ goalkeeper as they won the Premier League title in 1995, made 217 appearances between 1993 and 1999.
Roger Jones
An outstanding performer in the Rovers goal in the 1970s, helping them to the Third Division title.
Fred Else
Described as one of the best goalkeepers never to win a full England cap, arrived at Rovers in 1961 and made 221 appearances at a time when the club briefly challenged for the First Division title.
Terry Gennoe
Played 289 league games for Rovers between 1981 and 1992, more than any other keeper in Rovers’ history.

Facts not dreamings of him getting kicked in the head and earning a penalty, that would be tha same game he had already let two easy shots go past him. Robbo is average at best. The list is correct already and Friedel is the best, I think you'll find the stats back that up as well.
I would have had Robbo there instead of Terry Gennoe...Terry played in the lower leagues but was a great keeper. Roger was a class act, Tim won the Premier League, Fred Else was the keeper when i started supporting the Rovers so got a soft spot for him and Friedel is a legend! Difficult choice but my vote goes to Flowers for winning the Premier League.

Gennoe was a top keeper, a great shot and penalty stopper, with a classy, assured presence. Easily better than Flowers and Robbo. Fred and Rog were before my time. Friedel was very good, but I think Gennoe was The Man.

I have voted for Terry Genoe, no goalkeeper can save everything but Terry was very professional in his attitude and you could never say he was at fault for any goal. He missed nothing in the air, never fumbled anything to let the opposition score, never got beat at the near post and marshalled his defence to perfection.
I wouldn't put Robbo in, his dedication to the cause can't be questioned, but he doesn't look like he will ever recover 100% from his trauma with Spurs and England. Any free kicks from the edge of the box on target usually go in.
Brad and Roger Jones were excellent as well, my memory of Roger Jones is always holding his hand up to apologise when yet another of his clearances went out of play, he must have hit 90% of his clearances into the crowd.
Fred Else always made things look easy, but I doubt he would have survived in the hustle and bustle of the modern game.

Why are people posting comments about the current tragic situation at Rovers on this page, there are plenty of other pages to post comments, have they no respect for these great servants to Rovers? It may be a slightly frivolous poll, but these men are from an era when players earned the respect of the supporters. I blame modern education or the lack of it!

Without doubt Roger Jones was the best goalkeeper I've ever seen in a Rovers shirt. The problem with this poll is that many of the voters won't have seen him play....when Roger played the average crowd was only 6k-9k... The success of the 90's brought a new type of fan to Ewood...no doubt Brad will win this poll and he was/is a good keeper, but if all of the voters had seen the two goalkeepers play then i know who'd win!
We have been blessed with some fine keepers down the years but, yes, R. Jones is the man.

Strangely, the York fans did not sing "Sir Roger Jones!" but me and my brother did - and two other Rovers fans in the crowd joined in.

Roger Jones is a legend but I never saw him play.
Withou getting all misty eyed about it though, if we are looking for "the best" it would have to be one who was playing when we were in the top flight.
Fred Else was apparently highly rated so must be worth a shout and there are doubtless others who nobody has mentioned. For me it would have to be either Flowers or Friedel.
I remember Flowers epic performance against Newcastle (the "bottle" match) and similarly Brad's when we won 2-2-1 at Highbury (not forgetting Cardiff of course).
Both were full internationals, something the others weren't and both were fundamental to the two greatest moments of Rovers recent history.
Overall, I'd have to go for Brad Friedel. I thought he was a bit lucky when I first saw him but it happened too many times to be an accident. He was outstanding for an extended period and hasn't lost any of it since leaving.
Definitely Brad; but a big thankyou to Tim.

It is relevant what he says about Roger Jones only playing in front of small crowds though.
Legend he quite rightly is, but Jones did not play in the top flight with us nor was he an international (or anywhere near ever being one).
Friedel and Flowers both played in top flight Rovers teams and made massive contributions to their success.
Friedel was consistently outstanding over a long period and gets my vote as the best.

These polls are for the romantics amongst us and rightly so. We all want our heroes to be in these teams. Apart from being objectively the best keeper, young Bradley ticks all the boxes on that score as well.
Many, many memorable performances (at the highest level) consistently over a long period.

It's not about challenging Shilton, Clemence (or Joe Corrigan too - a great era for English keepers) for a place in the England squad, it's about being an established top flight keeper. You said he was of that standard, well the facts prove he wasn't. Just checked, Jones had ONE England U23 cap. Plenty of keepers for non-top 6 teams get these caps, for example Paul Bradshaw gained an England U21 cap whilst playing for Rovers. Jones may have looked good in Div 3, but put him in the top flight and it would've been different. But we'll never know. Jim Arnold was awesome in Div 3 in 79-80 and Div 2 in 80-81. Howard Kendall took him to Everton, but a certain Neville Southall kept him out of the first team.
'new type of fan' wasn't meant to insult anyone, the fact is without jacks cash and the success that brought then rovers crowd would still have been in the 8k range....so the success attracted a 'new type of fan' who otherwise wouldn't have gone.

Same argument goes for the legend that is Simon Garner. Even in his prime, no top flight club came in for him. Why? Cos he wasn't good enough. Doesn't stop him from being a proper legend. He'll rightly take his place in the Hall of Fame. He'll be in my all-time FAVOURITE Rovers side, but not my all-time BEST Rovers side. But that's for later.
So I say again, Gennoe and Jones were clearly fans favourites, but not in the same class as Brad or Flowers, or even Robbo or Bobby Mimms for that matter.
