Rovers Hall of Fame: The Goalkeepers

TODAY the Lancashire Telegraph launches the Blackburn Rovers Hall of Fame, where you decide which players get selected.

We are giving you the opportunity to vote for their favourite players from Ewood Park, position by position, with a nominated shortlist of players featured every Saturday this summer.

We begin with Rovers’ top goalkeepers, with a shortlist of five to choose from. Cast your vote at the bottom of this page.

Brad Friedel

Freidel

A hero of Rovers’ Worthington Cup success in 2002, the American was also a crucial part of the side that secured several top half finishes in the Premier League.

Tim Flowers

Flowers

Rovers’ goalkeeper as they won the Premier League title in 1995, made 217 appearances between 1993 and 1999.

Roger Jones

Jones

An outstanding performer in the Rovers goal in the 1970s, helping them to the Third Division title.

Fred Else

Fred else

Described as one of the best goalkeepers never to win a full England cap, arrived at Rovers in 1961 and made 221 appearances at a time when the club briefly challenged for the First Division title.

Terry Gennoe

Gennoe

Played 289 league games for Rovers between 1981 and 1992, more than any other keeper in Rovers’ history.

I would have had Robbo there instead of Terry Gennoe...Terry played in the lower leagues but was a great keeper. Roger was a class act, Tim won the Premier League, Fred Else was the keeper when i started supporting the Rovers so got a soft spot for him and Friedel is a legend! Difficult choice but my vote goes to Flowers for winning the Premier League.

Steve Kean, message mate...you will never be able to lick the boots of any of these legends. We know you're only here because you now hate the Rovers fans and are laughing in our face...believe me, we'll have the last laugh.

Woah, major head bang incident. Robbo is one of the most average keepers we have had. The stats back it up too. Last season Opta stats say he has conceded more goals per shots on target than any other keeper in the PL. Facts not dreamings of him getting kicked in the head and earning a penalty, that would be tha same game he had already let two easy shots go past him. Robbo is average at best. The list is correct already and Friedel is the best, I think you'll find the stats back that up as well.

Gennoe was a top keeper, a great shot and penalty stopper, with a classy, assured presence. Easily better than Flowers and Robbo. Fred and Rog were before my time. Friedel was very good, but I think Gennoe was The Man.

I remember John Filan having a class season. Nice to think of good times for a change. Maybe Mark Bunn can become a Rovers legend - still very young for a keeper. Obviously Brad Friedel wins. Was the best goalkeeper in the world for 5 seasons - it is not often Rovers could claim that we have the best player in the world in a certain position (only others in recent history are Shearer, possibly Duff for a season, and perhaps Tugay in a Xavi type role). Anyway, we can only dream of good times at the moment - but they will come!

Forget any hall of fame - not important when you think what state our club is in. If you have not read the statements on the 'Olsson' story of the people that 'Hendr'' damaged financially then you should - horrific!!! I know many people who have had tragic experiences but they have never damaged other peoples lives - if what has been put in print is true then Hendry should be thoroughly ashamed of himself and should not be allowed to represent us the fans at BRFC - Jack Walker would turn in his grave if he knew the type of character that Kean was trying to bring to the club - please read these statements you will be shocked!!
OUT WITH KEAN AND OUT WITH THE VENKYS AND HENDRY SHOULD HE ARRIVE AT EWOOD

If people want to moan, and that is not a problem, there are other threads to do that. If the LT want to build up an all time great team through peoples opinions, then good luck to them.

It makes a change from certain people going over the same subject, and allows supporters to look back into history with good memories, and good times, and temporarily block out the current problems.

Without doubt Roger Jones was the best goalkeeper I've ever seen in a Rovers shirt. The problem with this poll is that many of the voters won't have seen him play....when Roger played the average crowd was only 6k-9k... The success of the 90's brought a new type of fan to Ewood...no doubt Brad will win this poll and he was/is a good keeper, but if all of the voters had seen the two goalkeepers play then i know who'd win!

The hall of fame idea is not about who was the best, it's about who is your favourite. Jones and gennoe didnt play for us at the highest level so not in the same class as brad or flowers. My vote is for terry gennoe as he fits in with my era. Great keeper but I do remember a poor game at palace away in play off final. He looked very nervous that day. I always had confidence in him but he looked very human that day

Why are people posting comments about the current tragic situation at Rovers on this page, there are plenty of other pages to post comments, have they no respect for these great servants to Rovers? It may be a slightly frivolous poll, but these men are from an era when players earned the respect of the supporters. I blame modern education or the lack of it!

I have voted for Terry Genoe, no goalkeeper can save everything but Terry was very professional in his attitude and you could never say he was at fault for any goal. He missed nothing in the air, never fumbled anything to let the opposition score, never got beat at the near post and marshalled his defence to perfection.

I wouldn't put Robbo in, his dedication to the cause can't be questioned, but he doesn't look like he will ever recover 100% from his trauma with Spurs and England. Any free kicks from the edge of the box on target usually go in.

Brad and Roger Jones were excellent as well, my memory of Roger Jones is always holding his hand up to apologise when yet another of his clearances went out of play, he must have hit 90% of his clearances into the crowd.

Fred Else always made things look easy, but I doubt he would have survived in the hustle and bustle of the modern game.

Tim Flowers had a lot of bottle!

I recall him captaining the York City team which won the division 4 title in the early/mid 80s. Still outstanding - and Viv Busby was either player/manager or manager at the time.
Strangely, the York fans did not sing "Sir Roger Jones!" but me and my brother did - and two other Rovers fans in the crowd joined in.

Terry Gennoe was keeper when I first started watching Rovers and I remember him having a couple of outstanding seasons.

Roger Jones is a legend but I never saw him play.

Withou getting all misty eyed about it though, if we are looking for "the best" it would have to be one who was playing when we were in the top flight.

Fred Else was apparently highly rated so must be worth a shout and there are doubtless others who nobody has mentioned. For me it would have to be either Flowers or Friedel.

I remember Flowers epic performance against Newcastle (the "bottle" match) and similarly Brad's when we won 2-2-1 at Highbury (not forgetting Cardiff of course).

Both were full internationals, something the others weren't and both were fundamental to the two greatest moments of Rovers recent history.

Overall, I'd have to go for Brad Friedel. I thought he was a bit lucky when I first saw him but it happened too many times to be an accident. He was outstanding for an extended period and hasn't lost any of it since leaving.

Definitely Brad; but a big thankyou to Tim.

I hope he only means "young" - can't help it if you've only seen post - Walker Rovers.

It is relevant what he says about Roger Jones only playing in front of small crowds though.
Legend he quite rightly is, but Jones did not play in the top flight with us nor was he an international (or anywhere near ever being one).

Friedel and Flowers both played in top flight Rovers teams and made massive contributions to their success.

Friedel was consistently outstanding over a long period and gets my vote as the best.

Probably because we have had the best Rovers teams since the war over the last few years. That's a simple fact.

These polls are for the romantics amongst us and rightly so. We all want our heroes to be in these teams. Apart from being objectively the best keeper, young Bradley ticks all the boxes on that score as well.

Many, many memorable performances (at the highest level) consistently over a long period.

Nuff said.

Sorry but think your rose tinteds are showing here. If Jones was good enough to play for a 'top 6' side, in ANY era, he would have. Simple as. Some top flight team would've bought him. It's not about challenging Shilton, Clemence (or Joe Corrigan too - a great era for English keepers) for a place in the England squad, it's about being an established top flight keeper. You said he was of that standard, well the facts prove he wasn't. Just checked, Jones had ONE England U23 cap. Plenty of keepers for non-top 6 teams get these caps, for example Paul Bradshaw gained an England U21 cap whilst playing for Rovers. Jones may have looked good in Div 3, but put him in the top flight and it would've been different. But we'll never know. Jim Arnold was awesome in Div 3 in 79-80 and Div 2 in 80-81. Howard Kendall took him to Everton, but a certain Neville Southall kept him out of the first team.

Same argument goes for the legend that is Simon Garner. Even in his prime, no top flight club came in for him. Why? Cos he wasn't good enough. Doesn't stop him from being a proper legend. He'll rightly take his place in the Hall of Fame. He'll be in my all-time FAVOURITE Rovers side, but not my all-time BEST Rovers side. But that's for later.

So I say again, Gennoe and Jones were clearly fans favourites, but not in the same class as Brad or Flowers, or even Robbo or Bobby Mimms for that matter.

Roger Jones for me safest pair of hands ever !

That’s your opinion that’s all, I disagree with it.

Seriously mate before mouthing off you should do your research properly….Roger Jones DID PLAY IN THE “TOP FLIGHT” of English football with Newcastle United 1976/77 season…….makes your argument now seem a tiny bit silly doesn’t it ;-)))

If I remember right he saved two penalties against Southport night match away somewhere about 1973 - 74 some games you thought nobody could beat him

All about opinions as you say. Can't argue with the facts though, there in black and white.

When choosing an hall of fame we are not choosig the best ever we are choosing players who have made the biggest impression on you over your time watching Rovers.Friedle in the last twenty years would get my vote but in my time reaching back to Reg Elvey,Roger Jones has to be my choice.Lets face it with the standard of keepers on the list being voted 5th best would be an honour. The only one I ever met was Terry Gennoe and if we were voting for a gentleman he would take some beating.
