CHORLEY charged right back into the Evo-Stik League Premier Division promotion picture as they rocked play-off rivals Marine to start 2012 with a bang.

The Magpies travelled to College Road for their Mersey mission fully aware that a defeat could have dealt their hopes a major blow.

But Tom Ince (20) gave them an ideal start, although the prolific Neil Harvey levelled from the spot for Marine three minutes before the break.

Steve Foster restored Chorley’s advantage from the penalty spot on 53 minutes only for Aaron Rey to fire Marine level.

But two goals in a minute won the match for Garry Flitcroft’s men as Mark Ross (71) and Chris Denham (72) found the net to cheer the travelling fans.

It was also a day to remember for Clitheroe in the Evo-Stik League as they came from behind to beat Harrogate Railway Athletic 3-1 at Shawbridge.

Carl Garner’s men, playing their second game in 48 hours after their Saturday loss at Durham, were on the back foot from the moment Jon Maloney put the Yorkshire outfit ahead on 14 minutes.

But Marcus Calvert grabbed his first for the Blues on 75 minutes and then the prolific Ashley Parillon put Clitheroe ahead on 86 minutes from the penalty spot.

And then in stoppage time Parillon grabbed his second and Clitheroe’s third to win the match.

In the North West Counties League Ramsbottom United were sent crashing to a shock loss at Squires Gate as Ben Fishwick’s goal stunned the locals.

And it was a bad day for Padiham as they went down heavily to Silsden.

But the result of the day belonged to AFC Darwen.

Kenny Langford’s Salmoners, without a win since October, were handed the horrid start to the New Year with the long trip up the M6 and along the A590 to Barrow for their game at Holker Old Boys.

But they had a day to remember as they crushed Holker 7-0.

Stephen Lee bagged a brace with Anthony Hodges, Gary Brown, Jonathan Aspden, Johnathan Hession and Ben Stanford scoring the others to make it a great journey back for the locals.

The weather also had its say with Colne’s big North West Counties League local derby with Barnoldswick Town postponed because of a waterlogged XLCR Stadium pitch.

And it was a similar story at West View as Bacup Borough’s home clash with AFC Blackpool went the same way. And Nelson’s first game since the death of Jason Powrie was also a victim of the weather.
