NEWLY-appointed Rossendale United boss Paul Colgan wants to see more people flock through the Dark Lane gates.

He wants to see his side cheered on by the people of the Valley – and you can’t blame him.

But then again, doesn’t every boss in non-league wish for the same thing?

Of course they do – but what many fans may not realise is just how great the divide is, even in non-league circles.

Rossendale can’t afford to go splashing out on players. They instead rely upon lads who want to turn out for the side and maybe pick up a few quid in expenses.

Not all clubs are like that, not by any stretch of even the wildest imagination.

It is even worse in the Evo-Stik League where three teams are paying the big money and the others struggle to compete financially.

Some do shine through and overcome the odds – but they are rare breeds.

Yes, clubs can pay what they like; that is their prerogative.

But the clubs should be mindful of the future and not put all their eggs in one basket for a short-term gain.

Too many clubs have suffered in the past – and the fans should try and support their local clubs.
