Ramsbottom United 3 Cammell Laird 3

RAMSBOTTOM United recovered from 3-1 down to draw with Cammell Laird after a nervous start to life in the Evo-Stik League First Division North on Saturday.

The Rams were playing at this level for the first time in their history, after winning the North West Counties Premier Division last term, but fell behind in the fourth minute.

A low cross from the left had the Rams defence, weakened by a number of absentees, at sixes and sevens – with Jamie Henders side-footing home.

The home side’s hesitancy allowed Cammell Laird to create a number of chances.

Joe Gibiluru struck the post, while Michael Grogan headed against the bar.

The visitors made it 2-0 on 34 minutes when Henders stroked home a low right wing cross.

But Rammy pulled a goal back four minutes later as Kieron Pickup’s shot at goal was deflected and Lee Gaskell reacted quickest to nod home.

Henders, though, completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute to make it 3-1.

Ramsbottom joint manager Anthony Johnson came on for his first competitive game in more than 12 months and Gaskell halved the deficit.

It was Johnson who headed home Phil Dean’s cross to level with three minutes left.
