CHORLEY manager Matt Jansen bemoaned his side’s wayward finishing after they slumped to a third home defeat of the season.

The Magpies bossed this game for long periods, carving out a succession of gilt-edged chances against an uncompromising Alfreton backline.

But for all Chorley’s neat approach play, they paid a heavy price for a lack of composure in front of goal as the visitors pulled off a smash and grab.

And Jansen was frustrated with the chances his side missed as the Magpies saw the chance to move into the top half of the National League North evade them.

“You’ve got to be clinical and ruthless in front of goal because if you aren’t then things like this can happen,” said Jansen.

“We created chance after chance after chance but didn’t finish them off and put the game out of sight, which has happened too often this season.”

Striker Lewis Guy could have helped himself to a hat-trick before he showed great vision to set-up midfielder Andy Bond for a close range finish in the 36th minute to put Chorley ahead.

Both sides traded blows after the break but the Magpies failed to grab the second goal needed to kill the visitors off.

Then two goals in as many minutes changed the complexion of the game.

John Johnston capitalised on a lapse of concentration to beat keeper Sam Ashton to a through ball before coolly finishing into an empty net.

The home fans were then stunned into silence a minute later when former Sheffield United striker Robertson outmuscled defender Andy Teague and swept a low finish into the bottom corner.

That led to a late onslaught as visiting keeper Matt Duke twice denied Bond and Teague blasted a volley wastefully over the bar but the Magpies failed to find the goal their performance deserved.
