ANDY Teague lifted the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy for Chorley last night, after setting the Magpies on their way to a 3-0 win over neighbours Clitheroe.

The captain broke the deadlock for the Conference North club in the fourth minute at Bolton Wanderers’ Macron Stadium, and they never looked back, with James Dean and Chris Almond following up before half time as the Magpies won the trophy for a 16th time.

Clitheroe, 51 places below Chorley in Evo-Stik First Division North, can be proud of the way they took the game to Garry Flitcroft’s Magpies in a goalless second half.

But the damage was done in the first after Chorley got off to a dream start from a recycled corner that was taken by Adam Mather, returned by Dean and headed in powerfully by centre half Teague.

The Magpies doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Dean was brought down by Zach Hibbert as he tried to round the Clitheroe keeper, who he sent the wrong way from the resultant penalty.

Credit to Clitheroe, though, they never allowed their heads to drop, and had they been able to halve the deficit just before the half-hour could have unsettled Chorley. Jack Lynch robbing the Magpies of possession in their own box. He squared for Gonzales but between them the pair tried to pass the ball into the net and Lynch ultimately had two snatched shots blocked.

The Magpies swiftly boosted their advantage with a third as Almond clipped the ball over Hibbert, who had advanced off his line.

But still Simon Garner’s side tried to make inroads, and Gonzales was unlucky to hit the outside of the near left post with a fierce strike at the end of the first half.

Player-manager Garner made a change at the start of the second, introducing wide man Zac Dale.

The switch almost paid immediate dividends but the substitute’s shot was too tame to trouble Aaron Grundy in goal.

Gonzales then burst on to Danny Morton’s through ball, but Grundy made a vital block.

Roberto Bonaminio had to clear off the line from Dale Whitham to prevent a fourth goal for Chorley.
