Restraint plea to East Lancashire Euro 2012 revellers

FOOTBALL fans are being urged to enjoy Euro 2012 responsibly.

Community safety bosses have launched a campaign, to coincide with the tournament which starts on Friday, that aims to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour and domestic violence.

Statistics show a rise in such inc-idents during major football tour-nament, but members of Burnley’s Community Safety Partnership are pre-empting any problems with this campaign.

The campaign mirrors a similar series of activities around the last World Cup and each week will feature a difference theme.

Coun Shah Hussain, the council’s executive member for community services, said: “It’s great to see England in Euro 2012 and everyone wants them to do well.

“This campaign isn’t about spoiling people’s fun; it’s about encouraging people to drink responsibly and think about their actions and the potential impact of drinking to excess can have.

“During events such as Euro 2012 people tend to drink more and inc-reased alcohol consumption can lead to problems.

“The aim is to get across positive messages during the football tourn-ament to encourage people to think about issues such as the effect alcohol has in terms of the potential for violence, its effect on relationships and on their health, or simply asking people to recycle their drinks cans and bottles.”

Erm, that's the point; not everyone does want them to do well, because then the violence and antisocial behaviour drags on the further England progress.

Have you any comments about the story?

I want England to do well, but that's because nobody is going to come home wasted every time they win, and batter me.

What is it about Football success either nationally or locally seems to end up in drunken violence on the streets? It is true that incidents of domestic violence increase during these tournaments. even a local football team winning a cup or league has the same effect locally. People just can't enjoy a drink and go home, they have to get smashed for some reason. Perhaps there is a bigger problem behind this.
