CHORLEY secured a record 17th Lancashire Challenge Trophy success after edging plucky underdogs Lancaster City on penalties.

The Magpies twice came from behind against their opponents, from two divisions lower, to force spot kicks, and Sam Ashton saved two penalties while Jack Lynch, Darren Stephenson and Paul Jarvis held their nerve from 12 yards.

City had opened the scoring inside two minutes. Ashton saved Ricky Mercer’s header from a corner but the ball fell to Zach Clark who forced it home from two yards.

Chorley dominated possession after that but it took them until the 37th minute to equalise, Jake Cottrell’s half-volley from the edge of the area finding the back of the net via a deflection.

But the Evo-Stik First Division North side were back in front just over a minute later, Craig Carney finishing expertly from 18 yards.

The Magpies were level 18 minutes from time when Mercer was penalised for handball from Jordan Connerton’s header.

Stephenson, on as a substitute for James Dean, saw his spot kick saved by Mike Hale, but the striker reacted quickest to bury the rebound and send the game to penalties.
