CHORLEY boss Matt Jansen was pleased with his side's character as they came from a goal down to defeat Clitheroe in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy quarter final on Tuesday night.

The Magpies are defending champions but fell behind in the second half when Sefton Gonzales put Simon Garner's side in front.

But the lead lasted just six minutes before Dale Whitham levelled and Sam Cosgrove won it for the hosts with 10 minutes remaining.

The result means Chorley join Padiham as the only sides definitely in the last four of the competition.

And Jansen is hopeful the win, which was his side's first in seven matches in all competitions, can help propel them back towards the National League North play-off places when they resume their league campaign at leaders Nuneaton Town on Saturday week.

Jansen said: "We have had a bit of a lull and a poor run of results and yes we weren't brilliant for the first 60 minutes but we have shown character and come back into it and got a win which was much needed to boost the lads and hopefully this will kick start us.

"We need to do it from the first whistle to the last whistle and when they do that I think we will thump a side because we have got a great bunch of players.

"We were a bit lacklustre and it was a little bit flat and I made that point in the dressing room at half time.

"In the second half not a lot changed and then they scored and that seemed to give us a little bit of fight and little bit of anger and then we went on from and showed it.

"The team spirit and togetherness that I got on Saturday (in defeat to North Ferriby United) was shown in the last half hour.

"It was more the Chorley side that I want to play in the last half an hour but it wasn't in the first 60 minutes."

Jansen was also full of praise for matchwinner Cosgrove who is on loan at Victory Park from League One side Wigan Athletic.

"Sam can be very good," said Jansen. "He's just a young lad, he's got pace to burn, he's big and he's strong and if he believes in himself he could do very well."

And the Chorley boss also revealed that he might look to strengthen the squad before his side's next league fixture.

He added: "If there is anybody that we can strengthen the squad with then we will be looking to do that."

Clitheroe, meanwhile, are also without a league fixture this weekend with the Blues back in action against Northwich Victoria on Saturday week.
