CHORLEY will make the trip to the north east coast to take on cup specialists Whitley Bay in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The clash with the Northern League Division One outfit, who won the FA Vase three years in a row between 2009 and 2011, is the Magpies’ reward for their 2-0 second qualifying round win at home to Frickley Athletic on Saturday.

Chorley, who play three steps higher up the non-league ladder than Whitley Bay, have made promotion from the Vanarama National League North their priority this season.

But speaking after James Dean’s second-half double strike saw off stubborn Frickley, Magpies boss Matt Jansen admitted he is determined to oversee a money-spinning run in the competition.

The Chorley manager said: “It’s a great competition and I want to go far in it.

“It’s a good earner for the club if you progress and I want do very well in the competition.”

The tie will be the first time the two clubs have met since the 1999-2000 season when they were both members of the UniBond League.

The winners of the tie will receive £7,500 and progress to the fourth qualifying round, where they will be joined by Conference National clubs, and the final round before League One and Two clubs enter the fray.

Whitley Bay have won four matches to get to this stage – netting £10,925 – but Chorley’s road to Wembley got under way at the weekend with their hard-fought victory over Evo-Stik League Premier Division outfit Frickley.

Jansen said: “They came here and tried to shut-up shop. They were playing for a draw and making it difficult for us.

“We were a little bit impatient when we were in possession of the ball. I was a little bit frustrated as we were trying to force things too early and too quickly.

“I said that at half-time and in the second half we had that little bit more composure.”

Dean was given a starting spot after Accrington Stanley refused permission to allow the on-loan Marcus Carver to feature.

And Dean made the most of his chance, netting his first goals of the campaign, breaking the deadlock from the penalty spot after man-of-the-match Darren Stephenson was brought down in the box, and killing the contest late on with a near-post shot.

Jansen said: “It was great that Deano got off the mark. He worked hard.

“It wasn’t happening for him in the first half, and he was getting a little bit frustrated, but I said to him that he if kept working hard, he’d get his chances.

“That’s what happened and hopefully he’ll build on it now and get many more.”

The Magpies are in action tonight when they travel to Ashton Athletic for a friendly. Kick off is at 7.30pm and admission is on the basis of ‘pay what you want’.
