HALF-TIME: Burnley 1, Bolton 0

BURNLEY lead the opening day derby with Bolton Wanderers at the break, thanks to a Martin Paterson header.

Fresh from scoring a late equaliser for Northern Ireland in their 3-3 draw with Finland in midweek, the forward was teed up by strike partner Charlie Austin to nod in from close range, after Junior Stanislas and Dean Marney had drives blocked into the build-up.

There was a hint of offside when Paterson converted, but the flag stayed down and Burnley celebrated a well earned lead.

Bolton had their chances in a fiesty opening half.

After Charlie Austin scuffed a chance from a corner, the visitors broke quickly, but Chung Yong Lee fluffed his finish after getting into the box.

Martin Petrov also narrowly cleared the bar from the edge of the area.

But Burnley had pressed the newly relegated team, with Marney forcing a save from Bogdan with a right foot rocket.

Chris McCann and Paterson were unlucky to clear the bar with earlier chances.
