Stock still top target as Howe looks to end project

EDDIE Howe has turned his transfer attentions to midfield as he looks to complete his summer rebuilding project, with Doncaster Rovers star Brian Stock still a prime target.

Having bolstered his backline and added extra ammunition in attack with the five he has brought in so far, the Clarets boss has centred his search on strengthening the final outfield area needing attention.

“Midfield is the area we now look to improve,” he said.

“We don’t need drastic work, just tweaks, we have a good core, the other units are finished, it’s just a case of adding in midfield.”

Howe would have hoped to have a deal finalised by now. Not only has he monitored the Stock’s situation since Doncaster were relegated last season, but he was keen to secure as many targets as possible before their pre-season tour of Bath got underway.

Sam Vokes was added to the squad in time for their game at Bath City on Tuesday.

But the club is not anticipating further new arrivals before the weekend, as they prepare to round off their summer training camp with their fourth friendly, at Cheltenham Town tomorrow.

Burnley have made moves to bring 30-year-old Stock to Turf Moor in recent weeks but have so far been unsuccessful.

But Howe has already demonstrated his patience this summer, biding his time before securing long-term target Jason Shackell from Derby County, and landing Vokes in a cut-price £350,000 three days ago. It is understood Wolves initially asked for £500,000.

And Howe insists he is prepared to wait again if necessary.

Of the timescale in he said: “We’re flexible on that, it’s about the right player.”

Stock’s wages are believed to be the reason for the move not happening earlier this summer, and I understand it remains a stumbling block but one both parties are hoping to resolve quickly.

Meanwhile, Howe was hoping for a positive injury update on Marvin Bartley, who has been ruled out of the pre-season programme so far with an ankle injury.

“Marvin’s frustrated, he’s still got his big protective boot on,” Howe explained.

“He has another scan today (Friday) so I think that comes off and hopefully it’s healed up and we’re ready to push him on.

“He’s had a stress fracture which hadn’t entirely healed over the summer, so with the rest and the boot, hopefully that’s solved the problem.”

Martin Paterson and Kieran Trippier both came through yesterday’s training session unscathed.

Paterson missed Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Bath City as a precaution following a minor knock to his knee, while Trippier went off around the hour mark after being the victim of a late challenge.

Howe said: “Pato had a slight problem with his knee, nothing serious.

“Tripps is okay, I don’t think it’s anything too serious thankfully, you don’t want to see any player go down, let alone someone of his calibre, so I was pleased to see him walking around after.”

They dont announce crowd attendances at half time they announce crowd changes. There putting numbers on front of their shirts this season so it looks like their attacking. Looks like rovers are spending some coinage not like burnleys £100,000 , free signings. Dingles here Dingles there theyve got no software or money.

You seem to be missing the point! You asked why Burnley fans only post 5 comments and the reason is, unlike with Rovers, Burnley fans have a dedicated forum on Claretsmad. Rovers fans seem to enjoy using the LET website. Do you understand?

Good point midas, but I enjoy looking at the doom and gloom from the rovers fans. The last 18 months of them sulking on this web-site, keeps the smile on my face everyday!!

So how much money realistically will the Rovers spend when their gates fall and the team drifts down the table. Deep down they know that with the current manager and board they will struggle. Players will be lining up to leave. Burnley have been through this scenario, Rovers have it to come.

Burnley are a small club with small crowds and no money. They pay 350,000 for their players and everybody's happy....

No ambition, won nothing, empty trophy cabinet and going nowhere but they've found their level and everybody is happy....Happy days.

Yes we are happy with our progress. You happy with yours?

Blackburn are a small club with small crowds and are spending the last of their money.

Harwoodstblue, pretending to be a bstrd fan, was here posting on a bstrd article the saturday morning when the few real bstrds were at king george's working out how to get their money back if they 'bought' shares in the club.
Not even a real fan, just looking for some social contact.

Burnley FC...real happy supporters.

This is to all Clarets and Rovers fans. Am I the only person who finds the continuous trading of child-like insults both depressing an insulting? The behaviour of many correspondents belongs in the playground of a 'sink' Primary school as opposed to the columns of a local newspaper.

This kind of behaviour does nothing apart from encourage friction between peoples from adjacent towns in East Lancashire and diminishes the reputation of this part of the UK. It's a sad iriony that other parts of the Country now regard East Lancashire as a depressed area with a great past and no future, the comments expressed here on a regular basis do nothing apart from reinforce that negative viewpoint. Ask yourselves if it is not easy to understand why players tend to prefer to live in more salubrious areas when they witness this banal attitude to each other.

I remember when fans of our clubs disagreed with each other on footballing matters but respected each other. It is called rivalry that can be good and healthy provided it is not taken to stupid extremes.

At present I think that the Telegraph could improve the situation by not publishing the mindless comments posted on their web sites. As for me I am going to express and old fashioned view in that I hope both Rovers and Clarets are promoted to the PL in the coming season although not necessarily in that order and Accrington for division 1.
