Burnley close in on Vokes

BURNLEY boss Eddie Howe is close to bolstering his strike force with a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sam Vokes nearing completion.
The Lancashire Telegraph understands that the Clarets yesterday agreed all but a few remaining minor details of a deal with Wolves for the 22-year-old, thought to be worth in the region of £500,000.
Vokes has long been a Burnley target after a loan spell at Turf Moor last season and wants to join the Clarets to link up once more with his former Bournemouth colleague Howe – despite interest from Millwall as well as enquiries from other clubs.
He is expected to receive permission from Wolves to undergo a medical with the Clarets, with personal terms set to be finalised swiftly.
Burnley had previously been waiting for news on the future of their former striker Steven Fletcher before making their move, with the Clarets set to receive a sell-on fee from Wolves once the Scot leaves Molineux – as has been expected for most of the summer.
But they have opted to make their move before Fletcher’s Wolves exit, keen to bolster their strike force in good time for the new season. The Clarets are due 15 per cent of the profit Wolves make on Fletcher, having sold the former Hibernian man for £7m following relegation from the Premier League two years ago.
Sunderland made their long-anticipated move at the weekend with a £10m bid, which would entitle Burnley to £450,000.
The situation could still take some time to be resolved with Wolves yet to accept Sunderland’s offer.
Burnley will feel confident they will receive that sell-on fee, however, and further interest from Aston Villa, Fulham and Stoke means that figure may yet rise.
The Clarets had earmarked the cash for a new striker following the sale of Jay Rodriguez to Southampton.
They already have Charlie Austin, Danny Ings and Martin Paterson competing for places, but Howe had been monitoring Vokes’ availability all summer after the Welsh international impressed him during a loan spell with the club midway through last season.
And the Vokes transfer moved closer last week when new Wolves boss Stale Solbakken confirmed that he would allow the striker to leave, following discussions with the player.
The Burnley squad are now at their pre-season training camp in the south west of England and return to action tonight when they take on Blue Square Bet South side Bath City in a friendly at Twerton Park at 7.30pm.

Still concerned about the lack of ambition being shown from this new board it seems to have set off from where it left of with Kilby "penny pinching" Let's face it we sold a striker for £7M four weeks ago we drop £8M from Prem monies and were fannying around for a striker at £500k, brought a couple of no names in, hardly inspiring when you look at the competition in this league this season !
Do you class Jason Shackell as a 'no-name'?
Do us a favour and take your boring anti-BFC and anti board rhetoric elsewhere

We have (if they stay fit) one of the best strike forces in the division, we have a good young team that proved last year they are competitive and we just needed strengthening in defence (which we have with a couple of really good signings) and we probably need to add one, maybe two in midfield to give a real depth of cometition there.

Would you REALLY like to see Burnley go the way of Portsmouth, Rangers or any other number of clubs spending beyond their means? I for one would rather see us happily challenging for a play off place with a solid financial base for the club rather than us spending huge sums on players who carry huge wage bills that could potentially cripple the finances of the club. We are a small club and need to cut our cloth accordingly.....cert
ainly for the time being. One swallow doesn't make a summer and one season in the PL doesn't make us able to compete with the money-bags clubs in our division (or the lower reaches of the Prem).
Be realistic!!

Another steller signing and im sure burnley will surprise everydrfight.body in their relegation fight. They should go for David James Owen Hargreaves and Kevin Phillips to help with the dropzone fight. Bring on the trotters,
Burnley 1 Bolton W 3.
Thos names you mentioned are has-beens at the end of their careers and none of them are good enough to get in our starting lineup! We have a great young, hungry side and with a seasons experience under their belt and the additions we have made they will surprise a few teams this year without a doubt! Dark horses for a play off place I would suggest.

Just a ball-playing midfielder now and we are ready to go.
I think we are going to surprise a few teams this season
