BURNLEY begin life under Brian Laws at Old Trafford this afternoon, with defender David Edgar making his first league start since signing from Newcastle United in the summer.

The 22-year-old starts alongside Michael Duff in central defence, as both captain Steven Caldwell (groin) and Clarke Carlisle (thigh) are ruled out.

Robbie Blake, who scored the winner against United at Turf Moor in August, is named on the bench, with new boss Laws opting for Steven Fletcher and David Nugent in a two-pronged attack.

This is Nugent's last game under his current loan deal from Portsmouth, but Laws is working on an extension and will hope it isn't his final appearance for the Clarets this season.

Meanwhile , two ex-Reds return to Old Trafford for the first time this afternoon. Winger Chris Eagles, who joined Burnley in the summer of 2008, is set to start on the left, while young defender Richard Eckersley, who former boss Owen Coyle signed is named on the bench for the first time in the league since the opening fixture at Stoke City.

Both full backs Tyrone Mears and Stephen Jordan return to the line-up after serving a one-match ban against MK Dons in the FA Cup third round.
