BURNLEY'S latest England international Nick Pope reveals his brother inspired him to become a goalkeeper.

The Clarets No.1 made his debut for the Three Lions in the 2-0 win over Costa Rica at Elland Road on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old replaced Jack Butland for the final 25 minutes and Pope will travel to Russia on Monday with the rest of the England squad ahead of their tournament opener with Tunisia on June 11.

Pope, who only made his Premier League debut in September, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the international fold but admits if his brother Josh, who played more than 500 games for Suffolk non-league side Mildenhall, had not been a goalkeeper then his career may have taken a different path.

"My brother is a goalkeeper, he’s a couple of years older than me," said the Clarets man.

"When you’re a but younger and you can’t play on a Saturday or a Sunday I was going to watch him and watching his games.

"When you’re a younger sibling you take off the older ones sometimes, luckily enough he inspired me to be a goalkeeper.

"I still speak to him now about goalkeeping, he still plays. If we’ve got a weekend off I try and watch him play if I can.

"He’s someone who has been a massive part of my career, at every stage he’s been someone who has been on the end of the phone or at the table and I’ve been able to speak to him openly.

"We can give each other advice, have debates about goalkeeping and things you wouldn't necessarily get with people who weren’t goalkeepers.

"He’s been a big part of my journey."

Pope junior will be cheered on by all Clarets fans in Russia as well as family members in the stands.

England full back Danny Rose revealed that he has told his family not to travel to the tournament amid racism fears in the country while a number of safety concerns for supporters have been raised in the build-up to the World Cup.

But Pope, speaking before he made his international debut, said his family will be in Russia.

"It’s something we’ve spoken about since the announcement, it’s something they can’t wait to happen," said the Burnley stopper.

"They’re looking forward to it, they’ve never been to a World Cup and for their son to be going is something they can’t wait to happen. They will be out there."
