NAHKI Wells picked up a minor injury in Burnley's training ground fixture with Oldham on Tuesday, but Sean Dyche was delighted with Dean Marney's sharpness.

The Clarets gave several of their fringe first team players a run out in a 2-2 draw with the Latics, but Wells was withdrawn after 70 minutes as he still searches for a senior debut following his £5million move from Huddersfield Town on deadline day.

"Nahki played in the week and got a minor knock, that's all it was. The others came through it well," Clarets boss Dyche said.

Marney played another 90 minutes as he continues his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury, and Dyche added: "It was the best I've seen him in sense of his sharpness.

"He's looking more fluid in the way he played and ran. I think that's a big marker because it's a longer term journey for him to come back."

Dyche also gave a fitness update on longer-term absentees Tom Heaton (shoulder) and Jon Walters (knee).

"Jon is on the road back, he's out on the grass, working actively every day. He isn't back with the group yet but he's going well," Dyche said.

“Tom is a longer term one but he's going as planned."

Meanwhile New Zealand striker Chris Wood will return to training on Friday after the Kiwi's lost their World Cup play-off to Peru in the early hours of Thursday morning UK time.

Wood was only a substitute in both games for the All Whites, with coach Anthony Hudson saying he wasn't fit to start when he arrived on international duty as he struggled with a hamstring knock.

But Dyche doesn't believe the injury is a serious one

“I think over that side of the world they weren't sure he was ready to start for them so we'll catch up with him tomorrow," he said.

"Our medical team have obviously been in contact and I don't believe there's anything too major there, a bit of tightness, a bit of soreness maybe. We'll get eyes on him and see if he's fit."
