MATT Lowton believes the lower league experience in the Clarets camp has helped foster a winning mentality at Turf Moor.

Burnley might be seventh in the Premier League heading into this weekend’s trip to leaders Manchester City, but the right-back insists the squad Dyche has built is one without egos.

And former Aston Villa man Lowton, who left Villa Park in search of regular first-team football with Burnley in the Championship, thinks the fact so many of the squad have had to take a step back to go forward brings them together.

Almost all of the Clarets squad have experienced at least one full season in the Championship and have had to fight for a top flight chance.

Asked if that theme of having to prove yourself ran through the squad, Lowton said: “It does, yes. I did it myself.

“You want to play football and it’s not quite working out somewhere else you might need to drop down.

“It can give you a new lease of life with a new manager who gives you that extra confidence.

“The Championships is a tough league and tough to get out off. It’s a long season. The lads have all been through it. It just brings the team even closer.”

Lowton believes the lower league background that is a part of so many of Dyche’s players has helped to develop the togetherness that has been a major part of Burnley’s success.

“If you look through the squad a lot of the lads have played lower league football before,” he added.

“It’s a lot tougher down there and makes you grow up faster when you are playing down there. A lot of people who do that, there is no ego about them. Everyone wants to Premier League football and to work your way up to it keeps you level headed when you get there.”

Lowton believes the Turf chief has his eye on Championship stars more than most other Premier League bosses.

He added: “He knows the work ethic that a lot of players have got down there with their attitude to playing, fitting into groups and not bringing egos in.

“I think he looks there. He looks for the best quality and does his character checks before he signs people.”
