CHRIS Wood insists his start in front of goal in the Premier League has come as no surprise to him.

The 25-year-old has scored three top flight goals in six games since becoming Burnley’s £15million record signing in August, but the New Zealander said he had no doubts he could thrive at the highest level.

Wood plundered 27 Championship goals last season and has brought that form in front of goal with him to Turf Moor. Having not been given much of a chance in the Premier League by former clubs West Brom and Leicester City, he is now reaping the rewards of the faith Sean Dyche has placed in him.

Asked if he expected to adapt to the top flight this quickly, Wood said: “Honestly, I did believe I was suited to this division.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work to stay here but I felt Burnley was the perfect outfit for me to come into and mould into. It’s a great club to be at.

“I’m a guy that has a lot of self-belief and I believe I can score goals at this level, it was just about being given the chance.

“I’ve got that chance now, I’ve been backed by the gaffer.”

Wood headed home Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s cross to earn Burnley a point against West Ham United at Turf Moor on Saturday, stretching the Clarets unbeaten league run to six games.

That followed strikes against Tottenham and Crystal Palace, as well as an EFL Cup goal against Leeds, but Wood believes there’s still plenty more to come from him.

“I’d like to think so, I think there’s a lot more to come in my whole career,” he said.

“I’m definitely not the finished article, I’m looking to improve and bring a lot more to my game.

“I learn every game. I don’t think that will stop until I’m past 30.

“It’s a different type of challenge at Turf Moor now, trying to break teams down, so we have to learn and I have to learn very quickly to be able to do that.”

Despite his run of goals Wood is keeping any targets he has this season close to his chest, although he insists he’s happy to play his role without finding the back of the net if it brings success to the team.

“That’s all for me,” he said when asked if he’d set himself a target. “I go out there, work as hard as I can, and sometimes it’s not about the goals, sometimes you have to work hard for the team and create opportunities for others or make space for others.

“As long as we’re scoring and winning games it doesn’t bother me.”

Gudmundsson had come off the bench to set Wood’s equaliser up on Saturday and the striker was delighted with the service he received.

“It was inch perfect,” he said. “Johann’s got a great delivery on him and it was nice to put it away. I would have liked it as a team a lot earlier but that’s how it comes sometimes.

“We’ve got great quality throughout this team, anyone can put one of those balls in.”
