SEAN Dyche believes Burnley will see a different Robbie Brady next season once the club record signing has benefited from a pre-season with the Clarets.

Brady arrived from Norwich City on deadline day at the end of the January transfer window but the £13million man’s impact at Turf Moor has been limited so far.

He made an immediate impression with a goal on his home debut, curling in a stunning free-kick to earn Burnley a 1-1 draw with champions Chelsea, but since then just five starts have followed, with the Republic of Ireland man having to settle for a place on the bench in the other seven games.

But Dyche is confident the former Hull City winger, who can also play as an attacking left-back, will improve for spending the summer with the Clarets as he gets used to how Burnley work and the tactical understanding required to operate in the system.

“Robbie came in in January and I think he needs a pre-season with us to really get how we work and get used to the players,” the Clarets chief said.

“It’s hand in glove with some players, but it can take time with others, he’s taken a bit of time to get used to what we are.”

Brady was one of three January additions to Dyche’s squad, with Ashley Westwood also arriving on deadline day.

Westwood had a spell on the bench with Joey Barton, the third new signing midway through the season, but a player more used to how the Clarets operate for his spell at the club last season, preferred ahead of him, but former Aston Villa man Westwood has impressed since he returned to the side.

Dyche admits it is preferential to bring players in early in the summer window, giving them to bed in, but he knows that is difficult to achieve these days, having had to wait until late August to sign Steven Defour and Jeff Hendrick last summer.

“I think with signing players, the ideal way is when it’s summer and you get chance to work with the players through pre-season.” he said.

“That’s hard to do nowadays, to try and get players in early on is very difficult.”

One player who did arrive early in last summer’s window was Iceland winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

He has suffered an injury-hit first campaign in East Lancashire, starting only one Premier League game since November 26, but he came off the bench at Bournemouth on Saturday to cross for Sam Vokes to head home and Dyche was pleased with his contribution.

“His delivery (was good),” the Turf boss said. “I thought the subs affected it when they came on.

“He’s had a bit of an up and down season with injury, but I was pleased with his contribution when he came on.”
