Tom Heaton 8

Little to do in the first half but made some vital second half saves, including a stoppage time one from Borini.

Matt Lowton 6

Below his recent standards, especially going forward. Borini snuck in behind for an early second half chance.

Michael Keane 8

Looked after the dangerous Defoe very well and made one vital second half interception.

Ben Mee 8

Suffered a bloodied nose in the first half but again made some key blocks and clearances, particularly second half.

Stephen Ward 8 (Man of the Match)

Enjoyed plenty of space against Sunderland’s midfield three and used it well, delivering a couple of very inviting crosses. Defended aggressively as well, giving nothing away.

George Boyd 6

Missed an excellent early chance and drifted out of the game after that. Offered little second half.

Joey Barton 7

Controlled the midfield in the first half but not as dominant second half. Took a booking for stopping a Januzaj counter.

Jeff Hendrick 5

Lucky to avoid a booking for shove on Defoe after losing possession easily. Wayward shooting and poor distribution.

Scott Arfield 7

Justified his recent promotion ahead of Brady. Took up some clever positions in attack.

Ashley Barnes 5

Missed a glorious chance in the first half when he had to give Burnley the lead. Hardly involved after that.

Andre Gray 6

Joy running the channels against Denayer in early stages but touch deserted him as the game wore on.
