BURNLEY development squad boss Michael Jolley said Sunderland were unable to handle Dan Agyei's 'pace and power' in their Premier League Cup clash.

Agyei scored twice, including a dazzling solo effort from inside his own half, as the Clarets ran out 5-3 winners in their final group game of the competition.

It capped a memorable few days for the 19-year-old Londoner, who was on the bench for the first time in the Premier League at Hull City on Saturday.

Agyei had chances to complete a hat-trick against the Black Cats but had to settle for two, and Jolley said: "When Dan plays like that he is very difficult to stop. He got two and I thought he could have had more than two, I don’t think they could cope with his pace and power.

"I was really pleased for him that he managed to get on the bench on Saturday so he’s doing well but he’s got to keep working hard and hope he gets his opportunities."

Agyei spent the first half of the season on loan at League One Coventry City but since returning in January he has been around the first team and he was also on the bench for the FA Cup defeat to Lincoln City.

He's been training with Sean Dyche's senior squad as well and Jolley believes that can only benefit his development.

"He’s been training a lot with the first team," he said. "That’s great for his development, he’s playing against Premier League defenders every day in training so that is excellent for his progress."

Agyei's speed and physical prowess caused Sunderland problems throughout the game at Edgeley Park, and Jolley insists he has a chance of a strong career in the game if he can refine some of the technical aspects of his game as well.

"He’s got some great natural assets, pace and power, he’s got a terrific left foot, he can head it," Jolley said of the former AFC Wimbledon youngster.

"He’s got a lot going for him but he’s got to work at his game. There’s certain aspect of his game that he really needs to work at and the coaching staff are all trying to help him do that.

"He’s a good kid, he wants to do the work and if he does he’s got a chance of doing something."
