BURNLEY will aim to finish their Premier League Cup campaign on a high today when they face Sunderland at Stockport’s Edgeley Park.

The Clarets’ Under-23 side are unable to qualify from the group after suffering defeat at Cardiff City last time out but Michael Jolley is keen to see his side end the experience on a positive note against an impressive Sunderland outfit.

“We had a really good game against them up there and we did extremely well to get a draw, but they are a very good side, they’ve got a number of players on the fringes of their first team and they’re doing really in Premier League 2,” Jolley said of the Black Cats’ development squad.

“It’s a big challenge for our lads but this is the type of game we want to play more of, so we welcome it and we want to finish the group as strongly as we can.

Victory in South Wales would have given Burnley something to play for in their final game, but having taken the lead they ended up suffering defeat in a game they dominated.

“We felt quite hard done by, it’s probably as well as we’ve played all season,” Jolley said of the 2-1 reverse to Cardiff.

“We dominated the game, we had a lot of chances to get the second goal and we just couldn’t take those chances.

“The more the game went on the more risk we had to take because we knew we had to win it, and we’ve ended up losing a game we’ve completely dominated.

“It’s part of the lads’ learning, they’ve got to convert that good play into a result.

“They’re young players so they are a bit green sometimes and they can be a bit naive in game management, but by playing these types of games they should improve.”
