SEAN Dyche insists his side have to take on the likes of Chelsea with a different style to try and find a way of taking points off the Premier League’s top six.

The Clarets went more direct against the league leaders to try and exploit the space behind Chelsea’s wing backs, a ploy that worked in the 1-1 Turf Moor draw.

And Dyche said his side were never going to be able to out-pass a side such as the Blues, which is why they have to mix up their approach.

The draw made it eight games unbeaten at Turf Moor for the Clarets and having beaten Liverpool, Everton and champions Leicester City at home, they have now taken a point from this season’s runaway leaders.

Clarets chief Dyche said the key to success against some of the division’s bigger beasts was to make life uncomfortable for them.

“If we went into the Premier League and did what everyone else does, I don’t think we’d be as good at it as them,” Dyche said of Burnley’s approach against Chelsea.

“So we do things they’re not used to, that make it awkward and different for them, that make it strange for them, and that’s a key thing. I mention it many times, the brand of football I want to play is one that wins.”

Dyche has always kept his counsel on how other sides play and he reiterates that his focus is on Burnley, and helping them to win games “The rest can do whatever they want,” he said.

“I have no issue with people talking about whatever way they want to play. Mine is to find a way of winning, that’s always the way I’ve looked at football.

“We have to find a way to give the team the best chance of winning. Every footballer wants to win. If you win, you’re successful.

“We’ve dominated possession against Leicester, we had 24 shots at goal. (Against Chelsea) they have all the possession and we still get a point out of it.

“We’re not strong enough to say we’re going to have 500 passes and win every week in the Premier League so I have to design the team in a way that can win games, and we’re showing that in different ways when needed.”

Dyche also praised the performance of Joey Barton after Chelsea boss Antonio Conte suggested he had never heard of the midfielder in the build-up to Sunday’s game.

Dyche joked: “I’m not sure their manager knew about Joey, someone told me, that’s a surprise. I thought everyone on earth knew Joey.

“If they don’t, he’ll make sure they do!

“He’s come back in here hand in glove, he knows the expectation on him and the team, and he’s delivering, as he has done for us.”

Steven Defour was absent from the draw with Chelsea with a hamstring injury and Dyche revealed he is unlikely to be fit for the FA Cup tie with Lincoln City.

“It’s not too long but I doubt he’ll make next week,” he said.
