The Clarets’ clash at the Emirates was first on MOTD2 and Murphy and Keown had plenty to discuss.

Keown said he had ‘sympathy’ for Burnley over Alexis Sanchez’s 98th minute winner from the penalty spot, with Laurent Koscielny in an offside position when he won the spot kick.

But Keown also said some decisions went for Burnley.

“Sean Dyche was unhappy with the decisions but there were some favourables ones,” the former Arsenal defender said. “Gray on Mustafi, for me that’s a penalty, that’s one the officials have missed and it’s quite clear for me.

“This one (Burnley’s) is definitely a penalty. Coquelin takes down to his man, Barnes, it’s a little bit silly and a bit rash. I think he feels he runs into him but it’s definitely a foul.

“This one here (Arsenal’s late penalty). I feel that Mee is unlucky. Ordinarily you go with your foot there, he’s got his eyes on the ball, but it’s dangerous play, it has to be a penalty, he’s kicked them in the face.

“But you have some sympathy, because he’s offside, clearly offside.”

Murphy also had his say on Granit Xhaka’s red card for a scissor tackle on Steven Defour.

He described Xhaka as a ‘liability’ after showing stats that this was his sixth red card in his last 76 games, wirh 16 bookings as well.

“He gets himself in all sorts of problems because of his lack of athleticism. This technique for tackling he’s found is silly, it’s a scissor technique and he’s off the ground,” said Murphy.

“Him and Defour had this ongoing battle, I’m not sure whether that is coincidental, but he keeps getting himself in these predicaments.

“He will end up not playing, because the other players will get sick of it.

“The actual incident is a no-brainer for the referee. He’s left the floor and he’s caught him.”

Murphy added: “From Burnley’s perspective I thought they well organised, they were brave, they played two up front, they had a go. They were well drilled and looked strong and fit and for long periods they were in the game.”

Keown also discussed Burnley’s defending from corners, with Defour usually on the back post, except from when Shkodran Mustafi headed in Arsenal’s opener.

“Predominantly they have a player on the back post in Defour,” he said. “For some reason in the first corner of the second half he’s on the edge of the box. You should have someone on the back post.

“The majority of them are marking, three or four of them are zonal, I think it’s not a bad system, but to leave that open, he could have rescued that.

“Ward doesn’t really get off the ground, for me Boyd should be back a bit and he can head that away, but if there’s a player on the back post he can head that away.

“Lo and behold, the very next corner, Defour is back on the post. Did he forget to be there or did he have licence to choose when he was there or not?”
