BURNLEY are set to press on with plans to re-sign Joey Barton as they continue talks with the midfielder and his advisors.

A deal to re-sign the 34-year-old until the end of the season was agreed in principle over a week ago, but it was thrown into doubt following Barton’s FA misconduct charge for betting offences.

But the Clarets chief said talks were ongoing between the club and the player to establish where each party stands, and said the deal was a ‘strong possibility’ with certain caveats likely to be included.

Barton has been given until January 5 to respond to the FA charge of placing 1,260 bets on matches in a 10-year period leading up to May 2016.

“There’s ongoing discussions with him and his advisers just to make sure we’re all clear where we stand with that,” Dyche said of plans to re-sign last year’s supporters’ player of the year.

“If that goes well, then in theory there’s a strong possibility we’ll carry on with certain caveats for certain situations should they arrive.”

Barton has a one-game ban imposed by the Scottish FA for placing 44 bets on football this year still to serve, but could be available for the Clarets after that.

The club can only register him with the FA when the transfer window opens in January.

His potential punishment is unclear with the charge and alleged number of offences an unprecedented one.

Of Barton’s potential availability for Burnley between January and the end of the season, Dyche added: “It depends on timings, we finding out more about that as we go. There’s nothing else we can do.”
