BURNLEY need to start picking up 'ugly points' away from home, according to Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.

The former England striker said the Clarets needed to be 'tougher to beat' on their travels as he and Chris Sutton analysed Burnley's defeat at Stoke on the Match of the Day sofa.

The Bet365 Stadium clash was last on Match of the Day on Saturday and as a result the Shearer and Sutton only analysed the goals for the home side, and didn't take a look at Burnley's penalty appeal in the early minutes from Scott Arfield's free-kick or Mark Clattenburg's controversial decision not to send off Marc Muniesa for pulling back Andre Gray when the striker would have been through on goal.

The defeat means it's five losses out of six away games in the Premier League this season for Sean Dyche's, with just the single point and only the one goal.

And asked by host Gary Lineker if they could rely solely on home form to survive this season, Shearer said: "They need to start picking up ugly points away from home and be a bit tougher to beat. One goal and point away from home is not enough, they need to start picking some up."

Shearer and Sutton agreed that Stoke's goals had been well worked, but the latter also picked up on Muniesa's clear run out of defence to score unmarked in the Clarets box for the second goal.

"Mark (Hughes) said it was a superb finish from Jon Walters and it was, it's such a difficult technique not only to get it on target but the technique as well to lift it over the goalkeeper," Shearer said of the first goal.

"They worked the first goal and Muniesa gets his first Premier League goal, there's no-one picking him up in the middle and that's a clever finish as well with his left foot."
