BEN Mee said Burnley were strong enough to quickly put their defeat at Leicester behind them and insisted the Clarets squad ‘would not look back’ as they seek to forget a disappointing afternoon against the champions.

Sean Dyche’s squad have extra time to prepare for the visit of Watford to Turf Moor this week, with the game taking place in front of the TV cameras on Monday night.

That gives the Clarets nine days between fixtures and Mee insists they will put the performance at Leicester, which unravelled after a promising first 45 minutes in a new formation, to the back of their minds as they focus instead on working out a way to secure a home result against an in-form Hornets outfit, who have beaten West Ham and Manchester United in their last two league games.

“We’ll get over this quickly and then we’ll head into the next one and we won’t look back, we’re quite a strong unit,” said Mee.

“It was disappointing (at Leicester). We were in the game first half, then the game changes in five minutes, it’s disappointing to lose a game like that and we never got back into it after the second goal went in.

“We thought we did alright, we had a couple of chances as did they. We were in the game and we did ok. It was a sloppy goal at the end of the first half and a disappointing way to concede.”

After seen Premier League debutant Islam Slimani score twice Mee poked the ball past his own goalkeeper for the Foxes third goal as he tried to intercept a Riyad Mahrez cross.

“That happens,” he said of the own goal. “I won’t be too downhearted about that and I’ll look forward to the next game now.”

Burnley began at the King Power Stadium with three central midfielders in Dean Marney, Jeff Hendrick and Steven Defour, with Dyche setting his team out in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The plan was to keep the ball and take the sting out of the champions and for most of the first half it worked, and Mee revealed the plan had been drawn up at Gawthorpe in the week before the game.

“We worked on it this week, it was something the gaffer thought might help us out and for the most part in the first half it seemed to work pretty well,” he said.

“We were knocking it about well, it was just that five minutes in the game that was disappointing.”

Burnley are keen to make Turf Moor a fortress this season and they have already vanquished Liverpool at home, but Mee is reluctant to put any extra significance on Monday’s fixture.

“Every game is crucial, we go into every game wanting to compete and do well, it’s a home game and hopefully we’ll do well,” he said.
