SEAN Dyche believes he has a good mixture of characters in the biggest Burnley squad he has led so far after revealing Jeff Hendrick’s ‘quirky’ personality had added to the group.

The Clarets have around 20 senior first-team players this season having strengthened the ranks in the summer transfer window, with record signing Hendrick the final addition on deadline day.

Dyche has always taken a keen interest in the character of his potential recruits, with the team spirit at Turf Moor coming first.

Last weekend chairman Mike Garlick revealed a deal for Poland international Kamil Grosicki had been pulled due to concerns about the impact on the rest of the squad, but Dyche has no such worries with Hendrick, and is happy with the makeup of his squad.

“You want a mixture in your team. You don’t want everyone to be crazy or wacky and you don’t want everyone to be deadly serious. It’s helpful if the group’s got all different characters in it I think,” said the Clarets chief.

“You sign a player mainly for their talent but if you have a player who has a different dynamic to the group I think that’s a good thing.”

Hendrick has been with his new teammates for just over a week now and is pushing for a first start when Burnley travel to Premier League champions Leicester City today (3pm).

Dyche revealed the squad has already taken to the new addition who is fighting into the group well.

“It does take time for players to adapt to a new environment, he’s been at Derby since he was a kid,” he said. “He’s been so used to that club but I think he’s enjoying it.

“He looks like he has a smile, wants to be part of it. We managed to get him a bit of time last week.

“It’s well-documented, the culture here. It’s quite clearly obvious there’s a good mindset here. He’s adapted to that very quickly.

“I like his character, I think the players like his character. He’s got a bit of a quirk to him and there’s a good bit of belief in him but there’s also that humbleness to stay part of the group and make sure that the team is stronger than the individuals.

“I don’t think he’s stereotypical of a footballer. He’s got a different streak in there.

“A nice bit of character, he’s got a bit of chirp in him but in a good way.”

Burnley had plenty of personality in midfield last season with Joey Barton starring on the way to the Championship title.

He opted to forego another chance in the Premier League for a move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers this summer, and Dyche insisted Hendrick and Barton were very different character.

“He’s not similar to Joey, he’s a completely different character and he won’t mind me saying that, he’s a different player and a different character,” he said.

“They’re both good players and he has a drive and a will to keep improving, I like that side of him, Joey had that, despite his age he was enthralled by that we would do and what we could offer, Jeff’s a version of that.”
