MATT Lowton believes any new additions to the Clarets squad this summer must buy into the team ethic to fit in at Turf Moor.

So far winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson and goalkeeper Nick Pope are the only arrivals to Sean Dyche’s squad, both signing from Charlton for a combined £3.6million.

While the battle to add at least one central midfielder to the squad is ongoing, with three bids being rejected for both Derby’s Jeff Hendrick and Brighton’s Dale Stephens, Lowton insists new arrivals have to buy into the Burnley spirit.

Lowton himself was a new member of Dyche’s squad last summer and, although he missed the start of the season through injury, he eventually established himself as first choice right-back and he has no doubt the ethos in the squad played a key part in helping Burnley land the Championship title.

Now he is keen to see any new signings ahead buy into that mindset.

“Anyone that comes in has got to buy in to the way that the gaffer and the lads work,” said the former Aston Villa man. “Otherwise, they wouldn’t fit in.

“The manager does his checks and he knows which lads he wants to buy and it’s proved over the last few years that he and the staff are recruiting well.”

Lowton arrived at Turf Moor from an Aston Villa side that went on to be relegated last term and, ahead of his and Burnley’s Premier League return, he hopes the Clarets can follow in the footsteps of the likes of Bournemouth and Watford and survive fairly comfortably in the top flight.

“You’ve got to look at the teams that went up last time,” said the 27-year-old.

“They haven’t just hung in there, they’ve pushed on and finished mid-table. There’s no reason why we can’t do that because the team ethic is a massive thing in football these days.

“If you do get beat and your mates are there to help you out or if you play a ball in the wrong position and they’re there to chase it then over a season it will pay you back.

“You’ve seen it with Watford and Leicester. On paper they haven’t got the big money signings or the big names but they all work hard together and over a full season it pays you back.

“If your team-mates have got your back then there’s nothing better on a football pitch. We’re all in it together.

“The main thing you can do is work hard and once you win a few games that will bring confidence. There was no stopping us last season and we went on to win the league quite comfortably in the end.”
