SEAN Dyche hailed a good workout for his side after they followed a morning training session in sweltering heat at Gawthorpe with a draw at a sun-drenched Morecambe.

As temperatures rose above 30 degrees the Clarets got a stern examination of their fitness at the Globe Arena as they drew 1-1 with the Shrimps, with Andre Gray cancelling out Rhys Turner's opening goal.

For the second pre-season friendly in a row Dyche made 10 outfield changes at the break as his side continue to try and get match sharpness into their legs.

"It's something you've got used to, when the season starts it's notorious for it being really hot," the Clarets chief said of the intense heat.

"I was pleased with the lads, they've done a double session. They worked hard this morning, then a bit of recovery this afternoon, and they played the game.

"We made it clear to them we wanted them to train hard and then play hard tonight.

"It worked out really, really well to get that level of performance against a side who are ready. I spoke to Jim (Bentley) before and although he has limited numbers here he works them hard so we knew it was going to be a good test physically, they ran hard which made it better for our lads.

Last season's top scorer Gray was on the scoresheet for the second game in a row as he drilled in a low 20-yard effort, and while Dyche was pleased to see his main marksman hit the back of the net, he also hailed the performance of youngsters such as Aiden O'Neill and Cameron Dummigan at the Globe Arena.

"It's a nice habit, but there are good habits from the young lads," said Dyche. "Aiden showed up again, Cammy Dummigan is out of position, but the young lads are getting a sniff of it, a feel of it, and it's important for their welfare, so there are lots of good things, and we;re only just scratching the surface so far.

"We want every game to mean something, and this did physically, and moving forward we want the quality and shape, to continue and build into the season."
