PAUL Robinson’s vast experience at club and international level was a key reason for the veteran goalkeeper being offered a new deal at Burnley.

The 36-year-old penned a one-year contract yesterday to remain at Turf Moor, having joined the club in January on a short-term deal after an injury to Matt Gilks left Sean Dyche short of cover for established number one Tom Heaton.

Robinson was on the bench for the final 19 games of the Championship season and he could play second fiddle to Heaton again in the Premier League, with the Clarets thought to be cooling their interest in Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Nick Pope, who at the moment looks likely to remain at The Valley next season.

While Gilks was released by Burnley in May after two years at the club, Robinson was offered a new deal and Dyche said his experience was a key asset for the squad, and in particular the goalkeeping department.

“We are delighted to have Paul back on board,” he said.

“He continues to work hard at his profession and his wealth of experience is hugely beneficial to the team and, in particular, the goalkeeping department.

“Our other goalkeepers, especially the younger ones, will continue to improve while Paul is with us and we look forward to working with him again this coming season.”

Robinson is five short of 500 senior club games and 372 of those appearances have come in the Premier League with Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers.

He has also played 41 times for England and Heaton, who made his Three Lions debut last month and is away with Roy Hodgson’s squad at Euro 2016, has spoken of the influence Robinson has had in the short time he has been at the club.

“He’s been excellent in terms of adding that experience,” Heaton said. “He’s been there and done everything really.

“I’ve got on fantastically well with him so far, he’s been a very good addition to the squad around the dressing room.

“He’s another calming influence and he’s very good for me personally to draw upon with what he’s been through and different ideas and ways he did it, it just gives you another angle.”

Meanwhile, Burnley are unlikely to bring in any new signings in the near future. The Clarets had a bid for Pope turned down by Charlton earlier this month, but they have not been back in for the 24-year-old since.

Until Robinson signed his new deal Burnley were looking short of senior goalkeepers for the start of pre-season training on Monday, with Gilks having left the club and Heaton to be given time off following his exertions in France with England.
