ANDRE Gray admits he couldn’t have dreamt his first season with Burnley going as well as it has after ending it as a title winner and Championship top scorer.

The 24-year-old’s strike at Charlton on Saturday, which helped Sean Dyche’s side make sure of top spot, was his 25th of a remarkable campaign and saw him finish four clear of Fulham’s Ross McCormack at the top of the league’s scoring charts.

Gray hit the net 23 times for the Clarets in 41 league games as he fired them back to the Premier League following his £6million move from Brentford at the end of August.

And, asked if he could believe how well the season has gone since that the transfer, he said: “Nowhere near. The reason I was signed was to score goals but to score 25 and get promoted as champions is a dream come true.

“It’s massive (to finish as top scorer). All the awards didn’t really mean anything until we got over the line and got promoted.”

The former non-league hotshot also took individual honours at the Football League Awards, being named player of the season in the Championship in a vote from the managers in the division.

Gray scored four more league goals than Danny Ings, the man he replaced in the Clarets’ attack, did when Burnley won promotion two years ago.

And Gray’s partnership with Sam Vokes proved to be just as prolific as the pair netted 38 league goals together in their 37 Championship appearances as a strike partnership, four shy of the Vokes Ings total from 2014.

Gray believes the partnership with Vokes was an instant hit and the pair are now aiming to continue their remarkable record together in the top flight.

“We clicked straight away, we’re friends off the pitch as well,” said former Luton Town frontman Gray.

“It’s worked throughout the season and I’m sure it will keep working in the Premier League.”

Gray will head to the Premier League on the back of just two seasons in the Football League at Championship level.

He scored 17 times in his first season in the division with Brentford, and felt he could have netted more.

“I did alright last season and this season, I probably should have got more, but it gets difficult later on in the season, we were fighting for a lot and there was a lot riding on it,” said Gray.

His final goal of this glorious campaign was Burnley’s final goal of the season as well and Gray admitted reaching the quarter century mark was an important milestone.

“I was itching to get to the 25 mark after getting promoted, little things like that top it all off,” he said.
