BEN Mee said being honoured by his teammates as the Clarets’ players’ player of the year was a huge honour.

The 26-year-old defender followed up the six player of the year awards he won from supporters’ groups two weeks ago with the honour voted for by his teammates at the official awards dinner on Sunday.

It capped a memorable season for Mee, who has missed just 12 minutes of the Championship season and hasn’t tasted defeat since moving from left-back to the centre of defence after the defeat at Hull on Boxing Day, “To have that award meant a lot,” said Mee, speaking at Burnley’s title parade last night.

“The boys have been great all season, week-in, week-out every day in training, you get to know players and I know what they’re about.

“To get that recognition from them for the job I do for the team is great, it’s nice to be noticed by your fellow teammates.”

Mee’s standing within the squad has also been shown by the fact some of his teammates have created a song for him, A Message to You Ben Mee,which has been publicised by Joey Barton.

“A song as well, it’s been doing everyone’s head in for the past week,” added Mee. It’s picked up a little but and Joey’s social media powers have helped.

“I think it shows how close the squad is. You don’t get many teams making up songs for each other.

“It’s really good, it’s not a bad tune either.”

After helping Burnley seal the title on Saturday, Mee received his award on Sunday and finally got his winners’ medal and his hands on the Championship trophy last night as thousands of fans gathered around the Town Hall to see the Clarets finally lift the famous old trophy after the Football League ruled the trophy would not be presented at Charlton last weekend.

“It was a shame we couldn’t have it on the pitch on Saturday, everybody’s had their say on it, it was ridiculous,” added Mee.

“But we saw it (at the awards) and we got to hold it, so to officially have it is great and to do it in front of the fans is great.

“That’s what we were upset about, the fans travelled to Charlton for an early kick-off, it was great support and a real shame we couldn’t show them the trophy.

“I can’t understand why because I don’t think anyone was going to disrupt that.”
