JOEY Barton and James Tarkowski missed out on receiving their Championship winners' medals last night due to an administrative mix-up.

The Football League brought 25 medals to Burnley Town Hall as the Clarets were finally handed the trophy they secured with a 3-0 win at The Valley on Saturday.

But Burnley had submitted a list of 27 players to receive a medal and as a result Barton, who played in 38 Championship fixtures, and Tarkowski missed out.

Barton approached the stage to receive his medal only to be told there were none left.

Earlier the delegation from the Football League had been roundly booed and jeered when introduced by compere Alastair Campbell.

Barton had been among the biggest critics of the League’s decision not to take the trophy to south London, and to instead have it at the Riverside in case Middlesbrough won the league.

A Clarets spokesman said: “Burnley Football Club would like to apologise for the mix-up during the medal ceremony.

“The Football League advised the club that 25 medals were to be presented, but the club put forward 27 players. We would like to apologise to the Football League for this administrative error and every player will be receive one.”

Paul Robinson received a medal despite not featuring this season but earned a rousing reception after he was asked who the best team in East Lancashire was, and responded by chanting: ‘Champions’.
