TWO years to the day from a promotion that nobody saw coming Burnley captain Tom Heaton implored that this side ‘wouldn’t go down without a fight’ as they attempt to close in on a Premier League return at Preston tonight.

On April 21, 2014, Turf Moor rocked to the sounds of ‘We are going up’ as a 2-0 win over Wigan secured the Clarets’ promotion in a season that had defied the doubters.

Yesterday, two years on from that magical day, Heaton sat in a room at Gawthorpe and reflected on the memories of an Easter Monday that nobody in the Claret corner of East Lancashire will forget in a hurry.

It would appear plenty has changed in the past 732 days. For starters, Heaton is now captain and an elder statesman of the side, having turned 30 a week ago, and the line is led by Andre Gray, who has taken on Danny Ings’ mantle in front of goal and secured the Championship player of the year award that Ings made his own two years ago.

But at the same time, there remains plenty of Turf Moor similarities.

Eight of the side that started that day against Wigan are still at Burnley The battle for promotion is tighter this time, but they know what is required.

“It was another pressure situation,” said Heaton of the Wigan game. “We knew what we needed to get us over the line. There was a lot of anxiety, but as soon as we crossed onto the pitch, there was an inevitable feel, the way we went about it was incredible, Barnesy scored a really good goal - we can hopefully use that come the final few games.”

Of those celebrations at the end, as supporters poured on to the pitch from all corners of Turf Moor, Heaton added: “It still feels incredible, I still have memories after we’d done it all, Jonesy (David Jones) asked me if I thought I needed to calm down a bit - my eyes were popping out!”

Now the task is to make some more memories of another promotion campaign.

“It was a fantastic feeling, and we all know what’s at stake again, it’s a fantastic prize and it’s where we all want to be,” said the Clarets captain. You just have to focus on the processes that help get you there.”

Burnley are one step closer to the Premier League after Michael Keane’s dramatic equaliser against top-of-the-table Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

A video of the celebrations among the players after the ball hit the back of the net has gone viral online and the dressing room has been enjoying it too.

“We’ve seen it, it was fantastic, you can’t fake that. It’s a real authentic feel, I thought the whole place erupted,” said Heaton.

“It was incredible. We all know the importance of it.”

Heaton was one of the few members of the squad who didn’t sprint to the corner to join in the celebrations and he added: “I get into my own world, let the chimp out of the box for a few minutes and try to get the focus back. But even the players who didn’t make the squad, they were celebrating like crazy.

“And you just don’t get that feel at every club, and that’s one thing we’ve certainly got, that character and culture where we’re all in it together. That will stand us in good stead.”
